Hi,
I found that cdparanoia no longer works now:
run a complete analysis:
$ cdparanoia -A
cdparanoia III release 10.2 (September 11, 2008)
Using cdda library version: 10.2
Using paranoia library version: 10.2

Checking for MMC style command set...
Drive is MMC style

It says "no audio on disc", but there is one.
Running
cdparanoia -vsQ
will give only track 0 with 00:00:00 length.
If rip with
cdparanoia 0
will get loads of:
scsi_read error: sector=-2 length=1 retry=7
Sense key: 5 ASC: 21 ASCQ: 0
Transport error: Illegal SCSI request (rejected by target)
System error: Invalid argument
scsi_read error: sector=-2 length=1 retry=8

Transport error: Illegal SCSI request (rejected by target)
System error: Invalid argument
(== PROGRESS == [ | ...... 00 ] == :^D o ==) ^C
and only get a cdda.wav file of 44 bytes.
For the record, I then installed icedax, and it worked just fine:

Ops, just realized that the version that I've installed is
v3.10.2+debian-8 from testing, not the v3.10.2+debian-9 from
unstable. So the problem might be solved.

Hey, not so fast.

"It works for me" (TM) on my system. In fact, I'm just using it to rip a
CD *this* exact moment (well, as I am one of the maintainers, I am
sincerely interested in this package).

OK, some more information could be provided, to that we can narrow
things down.

Right, just the header.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I'm not really familiar with icedax since I switched over from when it
was called cdda2wav many, many, many moons ago.
The part that I explicited gives some hings, though.

That version is functionally the same as -8, since Takaki formalized the
transference of the package that was orphaned to a new team.
But many questions are pending:
* Is the drive an IDE/PATA drive or a SATA drive?
* What is the driver that your kernel uses for the drive?
* If you use an IDE/PATA drive, have you tried using Linux's IDE layer?
And the SATA "fake" layer (via libata)?
* Have you tested audio extraction with other (older, newer) kernels?

You're welcome.

Well, perhaps not and this is why we would like to get things narrowed
down.

OK. One question down.

dmesg | grep -ie 'ide\|ata'
would help here.

The output from lsmod would help here.

Couldn't you try a newer kernel, please?

This is quite interesting. Perhaps an strace of cdparanoia running an
extraction would be nice to have.
Some of these things that I'm asking would be log and would be best if
attached, instead of put inline.

I don't think so, as long as you're in the cdrom group and udev is
working correctly.

(...)
cdparanoia -A generates a file called cdparanoia.log, doesn't it? If it
doesn, please attach it too.
Oh, just one thing: do you happen to have hal running? Getting hal
stopped would help for the purposes of the test. I had problems with hal
interfering with wodim before (from the same package as icedax).

What happens if you try with the other drive?

This may indicate some problems with hal. What are the permissions on
/dev/sg0? Where do /dev/cdrom* link to?

What happens if you try to use something like "cdparanoia -d /dev/scd0 ..."?
> How can I provide other info?
Well, I hope that at least one of the questions I asked leads to an
answer.
Regards,
Ok, let me reply to above questions with a little bit order.
