As of Evolution 3.42.0-2, clearing the search bar does not work anymore.
The bug has already been fixed upstream on Oct. 6 2021 in commit https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/evolution/-/commit/acd57a8d7d0e9502a9ff24e288f806559024eb57

A workaround is to close evolution, edit the file `~/.config/evolution/mail/state.ini`, and remove the value for key `SearchText`.
