Dear Maintainer,

*** Reporter, please consider answering these questions, where appropriate ***

* What led up to the situation?

I upgraded to the latest security kernel on Stable (5.10.0-19). After upgrading, I rebooted.

* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
ineffective)?

Only thing that works to get 5.10.0-19 booting is to not have integrated AMD graphics. My other nvidia machine upgraded just fine. Disabling modesetting did not resolve the issue.

* What was the outcome of this action?

Computer gets past GRUB, attempts to boot, and then hangs on a black screen. After about 30 seconds, some error messages are spat out regarding DRM and "flip_done timed out"

* What outcome did you expect instead?

I expected the machine to boot normally.

Dear Maintainer,

i can confirm the problem.

All of our notebooks with integrated AMD graphics (CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 PRO
4750U with Radeon Graphics) are affected and don't boot anymore.

During boot the following error-messages appear:

[drm:drm_atomic_helper_wait_for_flip_done [drm_kms_helper]] *ERROR*
[CRTC:62:crtc-0] flip_done timed out.

[drm:drm_atomic_helper_wait_for_dependencies [drm_kms_helper]] *ERROR*
[CRTC:62:crtc-0] flip_done timed out.

[drm:drm_atomic_helper_wait_for_dependencies [drm_kms_helper]] *ERROR*
[PLANE:52:plane-3] flip_done timed out.

5.10.0-18 boots without problems.

Same thing here with an AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 3400G system.

Also gnome-shell have been complaining about "Failed to set CRTC gamma:

don't know what is CRTC 62, but clearly it is related.

Dear Maintainer,

I just updated to the new kernel linux-image-5.10.0-19-amd64 (ver 5.10.149-1)

/dev/nvme0n1p2: clean, 354739/1831424 files, 4384360/7324160 blocks

I restarted the system twice later but got nothing more than a black screen.

I backed off to the previous kernel linux-image-5.10.0-17-amd64 (5.10.136-1)

The system boots again with no issues, I'll keep using this kernel version
(linux-image-5.10.0-17-amd64) until a new one
gets released and try it.

Thanks for your great work.

The new Debian 11/bullseye kernel 5.10.149-2 does not help on my setup.
Still a black screen and nothing is logged.
Also in rescue mode without "quiet".

My GPU is:
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
[AMD/ATI] Tobago PRO [Radeon R7 360 / R9 360 OEM] (rev 81)
02:00.1 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Tobago HDMI
Audio [Radeon R7 360 / R9 360 OEM]

The GPU is running on an Intel X58 board with Intel Xeon W3530 CPU and
classic BIOS.

Kernel parameters are:
radeon.si_support=0 radeon.cik_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1
amdgpu.cik_support=1 amdgpu.gpu_recovery=1

My setup works flawless with linux-image-5.10.0-18-amd64.

Kind regards,
Andreas

After updating to the latest version (5.10.149-2), my system
running an AMD GPU and CPU still does not boot. I am unable to
retrieve any logs from the systemd journal.

Kernel command line parameters:

5.10.0-19 fails to boot, while 5.10.0-18 does.

I see you're already 'in' https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/issues/2216
and that seems like an important distinction to mention (to me).
All the other cases for where this issue was fixed, seem to have (much) newer
generation of GPUs.

In my case, it's because, without command line parameters, the
kernel will select the "radeon" driver, while I want to use the
"amdgpu" driver instead.

The options "radeon.si_support=0 amdgpu.si_support=1" disable
radeon support and enable amdgpu support respectively.

5.10.0-18 and earlier have always worked as expected. 5.10.0-19,
even with the very latest stable update, fails to boot.

Best regards.

It does not boot at all, I'm unable to SSH into it. It's not
merely that the display does not work.

At the moment, I'm unable to provide additional information, but
I'll try looking into it as soon as possible.

Then I'm inclined to think this *is* a separate issue, which is due to the
upgrade to -19, but that you happen to have an AMD GPU is 'not' relevant.

I realize it's not what you want, but may result in an useful extra data point
if you (for this test) switch those parameters to enable radeon support and
disable amdgpu support. Can you try that?

If that test does not make a difference, then I'm quite sure it's a separate
issue and it would be best to open a new bug report for that.

I will write an update in the drm issue too.

I tested the old radeon driver by removing all si/cki options with
kernel 5.10.149-2 and it boots ok and uses drm 2 instead drm 3.

But of course i added these options again and rebooted with 5.10.140-1
because of Vulkan support in the amdgpu driver using drm 3.

The debian 11/bullseye backport kernel 5.19.11-1~bpo11+1 boots ok with
the amdgpu driver too using drm 3.
