Package: colord
Version: 0.1.21-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

When I switch on an USB disk I obtain the errors hereafter in syslog :

Jun 2 23:34:01 mcfm4 colord-sane: io/hpmud/musb.c 139: unable get_string_descriptor -1: Operation not permitted
Jun 2 23:34:01 mcfm4 colord-sane: io/hpmud/musb.c 2040: invalid product id string ret=-1
Jun 2 23:34:01 mcfm4 colord-sane: io/hpmud/musb.c 139: unable get_string_descriptor -1: Operation not permitted
Jun 2 23:34:02 mcfm4 colord-sane: io/hpmud/musb.c 2045: invalid serial id string ret=-1
Jun 2 23:34:02 mcfm4 colord-sane: io/hpmud/musb.c 139: unable get_string_descriptor -1: Operation not permitted
Jun 2 23:34:02 mcfm4 colord-sane: io/hpmud/musb.c 2050: invalid manufacturer string ret=-1

I obtain the same errors when I switch on my HP PSC 1610 printer which have
a card reader in it.

The USB disk or the printer work crrectly so I do not know if I have to take
care of these messages.

With my best regards.

This appears to be colord-sane identifying the presence of a new USB
device and trying to probe to see if it's a USB scanner. colord-sane
deliberately doesn't have permission to do this for arbitrary USB
devices, just things that we identify as scanners.

This (should be) is harmless, but it could be silenced. Probably by only
attempting to probe devices udev knows to be scanners.

The bug number is 675710, not 674710.

I've made complementary tests.

With the HP PSC 1610 printer (printer, scanner and SD card reader)
switched off when I insert a USB key or switch on a USB disk colord
write no messages and with cups and colord and colord-sane running.

On a PC wich is not connect to the scanner/printer there are no messages
when a USB disk is connected and with colord-sane running.

I think with these observations that your explanation is not complete,
it does not answer why there are messages only if my printer/scanner is
connected and switched on.

Best regards

Francois

The error message with version 1.4.5-3 in bullseye is slightly
different, but colord-sane still outputs nasty errors with high
severity to the system log when connecting and disconnecting USB
storage devices:
