Package: vlc
Version: 2.2.1-5+b2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,
I got no video for h264 files (worked fine before).
Other info: gnome3, intel graphics 4600.

Steps to reproduce bug on my PC: Playing an h264 sample file such as:

http://download.openbricks.org/sample/H264/big_buck_bunny_480p_H264_AAC_25fps_1800K_short.MP4

I get:

leo@asbesto:~$ vlc Scaricati/big_buck_bunny_480p_H264_AAC_25fps_1800K_short.MP4
VLC media player 2.2.1 Terry Pratchett (Weatherwax) (revision 2.2.1-0-ga425c42)
[0000000001985388] core libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
libva info: VA-API version 0.38.1
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_drv_video.so
libva info: Found init function __vaDriverInit_0_38
libva info: va_openDriver() returns 0
[00007f683cc08cf8] avcodec decoder: Using OpenGL/VAAPI/libswscale backend for VDPAU for hardware decoding.
[h264 @ 0x7f683cc5e100] hardware accelerator failed to decode picture

with the last line repeated over and over. I'm using the default config
and I have no problems with other codecs. I've skimmed the apt logs and
saw vlc was upgraded a week ago (as well as ffmpeg).

I also checked the Debian BTS and found nothing relevant.

What's wrong?

Thanks, Leonardo

I have this same issue on my computer. The gnome application called
Video plays my video file with out any problems, but with vlc the video
is blank/black and audio working fine.

Here is a sample of the output from terminal;

mabo@debian:~/Videos$ vlc Insiders\ 722016.mp4
VLC media player 2.2.2 Weatherwax (revision 2.2.2-0-g6259d80)
[000000000101e158] core libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface.
Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
libva info: VA-API version 0.38.1
libva info: va_getDriverName() returns 0
libva info: Trying to open /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-
gnu/dri/i965_drv_video.so
libva info: Found init function __vaDriverInit_0_38
libva info: va_openDriver() returns 0
[00007fa246c68968] avcodec decoder: Using OpenGL/VAAPI/libswscale
backend for VDPAU for hardware decoding.
[h264 @ 0x7fa246cbfec0] hardware accelerator failed to decode picture

This last line repeats ...

As far as I know, this is a bug in libvdpau-va-gl.

Uninstall the libvdpau-va-gl1 package and restart VLC.

libvdpau-va-gl traced back the bug to something that VLC would be doing
wrong. However, this seems to be fixed in master VLC. Could you give
some insights if you are familiar with this part of the code?
