This should not be difficult, patch taken from upstream applies fine.

Can you help Ola with 2.6.24-based OpenVZ patch.
Ola,
We did that for Ubuntu 8.04 already... not sure how Ubuntu kernel
differs from Debian.
--
If it is done already for ubuntu it would most likely be very similar
for Debian. I think ubuntu base their work on the Debian kernel. This means
that it should be just some corrections that differs.

there's actually no need, Alexander GQ Gerasiov git repository has the
patch(es) in his git repro:
@Ola you can build a single linux-patch-openvz package build against the
linux-source-tree 2.6.24-5, take the diff from Alex git repository.
http://git.gq.net.ru/?p=linux-2.6-openvz.git;a=blob;f=debian/patches/features/all/openvz/openvz.patch;h=24164abaa82f8cb7f822974856965cba7c5eeb9b;hb=HEAD

and build a single patch, thats all.
Bye,
Thorsten

Since we are talking about openvz and kernel, may I ask for a
linux-image-2.6.x-openvz package like Debian already has for xen and
vserver?

You are perfectly welcome to do so. I have actually tried that already
as you can see in http://bugs.debian.org/392015
However it do not match the Debian Acceptance Guidelines as you can see in
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianKernelPatchAcceptanceGuidelines
So in order to get it accepted it must be merged upstream, which means to
be included in the Linus Torwards Linux kernel source.
This is the main reason why there are a set of linux images on
download.openvz.org/debian.

VServer looks currently dead.

Well, for an extra featureset, it may be accepted. As we don't longer
want to build extra Xen images and VServer is also not supported
currently, we may have a spare slot for them.

That is a pity. Is it a problem upstream or with the maintainer?

That sounds like a good thing to me. What do I need to do in order
to help with including openvz? Besides providing a decent patch?

It's a gross simplification. vserver is not dead, they are lacking a bit
behind the latest kernel release, which is the only thing some people care
about...

Really good to know. I'm the (co-)maintainer of util-vserver so
I really want the vserver kernels to be maintained. :)

no it is reality.
they are missing on the upstream namespace merge train.
vserver latest stable release is for 2.6.22
2.6.22 was realeased allmost 10 month ago.
going for openvz for 2.6.26 seems the way forward.

Also, IMHO the document
http://wiki.debian.org/DebianKernelPatchAcceptanceGuidelines is not
applicable to this case because it describes patches that are [not]
welcome to "standard" Debian kernel, while OpenVZ, Linux-VServer, Xen
etc. provide "flavored" kernels. In other words, these all are special
kernels with special use cases. So, either this policy is not
applicable, or linux-image-vserver and linux-image-xen are all not
conforming to the policy.
As for 2.6.26, OpenVZ team plans to start porting to that kernel as soon
as 2.6.26-rc1 is released.
<http://wiki.debian.org/DebianKernelPatchAcceptanceGuidelines?action=fullsearch&value=linkto%3A%22DebianKernelPatchAcceptanceGuidelines%22&context=180>
Thanks for this analysis of ports. Just to mention that i believe the
current rules or at least the current position concerning patches are
too restrictive and rigid. I tried to move about this concerning
architecture support patches, see in :
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=439006
Maybe you should post something there about what you write above, and we
can retitle this bug or something, but there needs to be some discussion
to happen about this above policy, and the debian kernel team need to
losen a bit about this.
Friendly,
Sven Luther
indeed the openvz upstream merge record is fun to watch :)
IMHO the coding style of vserver is not up to upstream merge quality.
even if compared to xen we are quite happy about its etch bug count.

sure,
it is for random_unsolcited_oot.patch.

great,
please post git tree once it is public, so that we can integrate
the flavour for upcoming 2.6.26 Lenny release.

BTW, openvz is easy to integrate into debian linux-source-2.6 package,
as I already said:

I just took a look into the patch (the devpts part, because upstream
Linux lacks namespace support there) and I was shocked about the
quality of this patch.
