Comments/Problems:

Using a netboot install image with non-free firmware; the wireless card
was not detected during the installation so I used the wired network
adapter instead.

The touchpad was not working, but an external mouse could be used.
This later turned out to be a minor issue but a cost me the most time.
Loading the i2c_hid_acpi module got it going.

Since this was a fairly new laptop I expected some things not to work (yet).
The missing firmware files reported by the kernel could be downloaded from
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git
which was sufficient to get the wireless card and bluetooth to work.

I always expected to run the system in a mixed stable/testing setup
because I wanted to install pipewire/wireplumber which seems to work
better with Debian 12. I ended up switching almost entirely to testing.

The sound card required the latest firmware from the SOF project. To get
the digital microphone working a different topology file was needed as
outlined on this page:

The system seems to do great otherwise, as it is my daily workhorse to
replace an earlier Fujitsu model (LIFEBOOK U937). The only non-functioning
element is the Fujitsu PalmSecure biometric sensor.

If you have a few minutes to spare, it would be helpful to know whether
the official D-I Bookworm Alpha 2 image is working better in that regard.
With a newer kernel, and newer firmware packages included (in an official
capacity), I'd expect your card to be detected and working out of the box.
There's no need to go through the whole installation process, just
reaching the network configuration step would be sufficient.

That being said, if you ended up with pulling various bits from testing
anyway, and if those work fine, the installer should be fine as well, so
whether to run that extra test is really up to you. :)

Do you need to load it manually in the installed system as well?

The Bullseye installer ships i2c-hid.ko, but no i2c-hid-acpi.ko.

The Bookworm installer ships both.

If the issue you've seen is about the missing touchpad in the installer,
that's unfortunate but expected in Bullseye, and this should work better
with Bookworm. It might just be that the kernel in Bullseye is a tad too
old, seeing that i2c-hid-acpi.ko was introduced in the v5.11 release cycle
(as a side effect of i2c-hid.ko getting reorganized).

If the issue you've seen is about the kernel not loading a required module
automatically, this is likely going to be a problem with Bookworm, both in
the installer environment and in the installed system.

Sometimes, it might be a dependency towards another component that's not
expressed in the Linux kernel code (e.g. via a MODULE_SOFTDEP macro). But
it's a little hard to brainstorm this without knowing more about when you
had to load i2c_hid_acpi manually.

context… we focus on getting sound out, not in anyway. ;) (For speech
synthesis.)

I think it might need some other modules to be loaded so that the i2c
bus is visible, and those might not be documented through a dependency.

These modules might or might not be available in the installer, and
that's why I'm suggesting checking what happens in the non-tweaked
installed system, as a starting point.

If I were a betting man, I'd put a coin on some LPSS-related module,
which is an hypothesis already being tested in another bug report
(intel-lpss-pci to be precise).

Great. We can keep this bug report for that purpose. Reinstalling is not
going to be needed:
- We want to check what happens in the installed system, with or
without tweaks like /etc/modules; nothing that will require a
reinstall.
- We might want to check what happens in a tweaked installer. Since
touchpad support can be tested from the very beginning, there's no
need to go through any installation steps. It's an ever lighter test
than what you already did above (testing wireless support), which was
awesome already!

Sure, I just meant this is definitely not going to be something that's a
concern for the installer team.

I'd suggest filing a bug report against src:linux indeed. Worst case,
they can reassign it to a more suitable component.

You might need to load it explicitly to make it accessible, it's
definitely there and loaded automatically if you go for e.g. an
encrypted LVM setup.

I just tested it and what do you know: the module is loaded
automatically. So the tweak to /etc/modules is no longer required.

Thanks, that's indeed what I had in mind. I need to finish chasing
regressions/fixes on Raspberry Pi, I've noted that down for later.

I should be able to share a small(-ish) ISO for you to test, so that
you can check whether touchpad support becomes available. Same story
as before: that'd be just about booting the installer, reaching the
language selection screen, and letting us know whether the touchpad's
working.

If that works, I'll need to coordinate with the kernel team to see
which component should be used to ship those modules (which would
then be picked up by further installer builds).

Tested and the touchpad is now functional. The pointer moves as
expected. Tapping on the pad does not translate to mouse clicks, but the
touchpad buttons work correctly.

Tap-to-click is a feature of the driver that I find annoying and
normally leave off, but I'm not sure that should be the default for the
installer. I have no real opinion on that, I just thought it was worth
mentioning that it behaves that way.

Many thanks for confirming.

The installer will use whatever is implemented by the X driver, and I don't
anticipate us diverting from the default settings, unless absolutely needed.
