Package: plasma-desktop
Version: 4:5.17.5-3
Severity: important

Dear maintainer,

When I try to update my system (Debian Bullseye) with "apt upgrade" it
says that more than 700 won't be updated, most related to the KDE
desktop.

On the other hand, if I run "apt full-upgrade" it will try to remove
most of the KDE packages (i.e. dolphin, kate, etc). I've tried to
manually update plasma-desktop with "apt install plasma-desktop" but I
get the following error:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
kwin-common : Depends: libkf5newstuff5 (>= 5.74~) but it is not going to be installed
libkf5xmlgui5 : Depends: qtbase-abi-5-14-2
plasma-workspace : Depends: libkf5newstuff5 (>= 5.74.0~) but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: kio-extras but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: powerdevil (>= 4:5.14) but it is not going to be installed

I hope that plasma-desktop is the right place to report it.

Thanks,
A.

Hi Aniol,

your system is somewhat outdated. Something seems to be blocking the
upgrade of some packages.

What happens when you try to manually upgrade libkf5newstuff5 and
libkf5xmlgui5 ?

I guess that the problem is related with qtbase-abi-5-14-2. In Bullseye
packages should depend on qtbase-abi-5-15-2.

Thanks,

Hi!
This seems to be another issue, namely
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=976389

It seems your system is so outdated that it can not find a right solution.

Try the following as root:

apt install libqt5gui5 libqt5quick5 # This should try to upgrade Qt
and friends but forcing the non-gles versions.
<upgrade your system as usual>
apt-mark auto libqt5gui5 libqt5quick5 # The first command marked the
packages as manually installed, switch them back to auto.

Yes. I've managed to solve it running apt full-upgrade and letting it
remove KDE and then installing kde-standard again.

After installing KDE I had to run these commands because I was having
the same bug (black icons).

Now it is solved and in fact it looked like a "me" problem, so I guess
you may close this bug.

Thank you!

Package: plasma-desktop
Version: 4:5.20.5-3
Followup-For: Bug #981597

I was recently upgrading my system originally set up as a stretch
system, but running buster. I can confirm that I had to completely
remove all kde related packages including plasma-desktop to be able to
do the upgrade to bullseye. This was a bit frightening, but after the
upgrade to bullseye, I was able to install plasma-desktop and got back
almost all of the KDE programs I was using.

Thanks for maintaining KDE in Debian!

Hi Johannes,

Did you do dist-upgrade? I simple upgrade might not find a proper
solution because several packages need to be removed.

It is really hard to debug this, and in general it seems to be an apt
problem not being able to find a solution, while there definitely is
one, as you have shown yourself by installing it afterwards ;-)

So, without more debugging - and that is not possible since you have
already upgraded your system, it is really hard to say why all this
happened.

Best

Norbert

I do remember that I tried apt full-upgrade and aptitude full-upgrade without
success.

I agree. I thought it was only my system, but now when I see this bug report,
I got the impression that it may be a general problem of stretch -> buster
installations upgrading to bullseye.

I have a stretch chroot hanging around that I could upgrade to buster to see
if I can reproduce it.

Cheers,

Johannes

I just installed plasma-desktop on stretch and upgraded stretch -> buster ->
bullseye without problems in a pbuilder chroot. So it seems there was
something more specific on my system preventing the smooth upgrade.

Thanks,

Johannes

Good to hear, thanks for reporting back.

I tend to close this bug ... any objections from other participants
here?

I'd keep it open, as it is not clear where the problem comes from and it was
observed on two independent systems. Maybe someone can figure it out before the
official release.

I dug up my upgrade transcript, and it shows, after the first apt-upgrade

$ apt full-upgrade

Some packages could not be installed...
...

Die folgenden Pakete haben unerfüllte Abhängigkeiten:
libc6-dev : Beschädigt: libgcc-8-dev (< 8.4.0-2~) aber 8.3.0-6 soll
installiert werden

...

i.e. the installation candidate for libc6-dev had a "Breaks" on libgcc-8-dev
(< 8.4.0-2~) but 8.3.0-6 was to be installed.

I just checked and libgcc-8-dev is only present in buster (8.3.0-6), but not
in bullseye.

I then "solved" it by removing libgcc8-dev which removed almost all of KDE
which I then reinstalled without problems.

Normally (in my pbuilder chroot with less packages installed) apt full-upgrade
will remove libgcc-8-dev.

It seems some package on my system still wanted libgcc-8-dev. I assume it was
just a temporary problem, maybe caused by an incomplete migration of packages
to testing. From my part, the bug can be closed.

Package: plasma-desktop
Version: 4:5.17.5-3
Followup-For: Bug #981597

Dear Maintainer,

I'd like to confirm that I'm seeing the same upgrade problems on my system.
This system has also been upgraded through Stretch -> Buster -> Bullseye (and
actually even from way before).

Following this thread, I've already removed libgcc-8-dev:amd64 (8.4.0-7).
In my case that did not trigger uninstalling a whole bunch of KDE packages,
just this from /var/log/apt/history.log:

===================
Start-Date: 2021-02-18 23:25:21
Commandline: apt-get remove libgcc-8-dev
Remove: gcc-8-multilib:amd64 (8.4.0-7), gcc-8:amd64 (8.4.0-7), libgfortran-8-dev:amd64 (8.4.0-7), libstdc++-8-dev:amd64 (8.4.0-7), gfortran>
End-Date: 2021-02-18 23:25:25

Start-Date: 2021-02-18 23:26:22
Commandline: apt-get install libc++-dev
Install: libc++1-11:amd64 (1:11.0.1-2, automatic), libc++-11-dev:amd64 (1:11.0.1-2, automatic), libc++abi1-11:amd64 (1:11.0.1-2, automatic)
Upgrade: libc++-dev:amd64 (1:9.0-49.1, 1:11.0-51+nmu4)
Remove: libc++abi1-9:amd64 (1:9.0.1-15+b1), libc++-9-dev:amd64 (1:9.0.1-15+b1), libc++1-9:amd64 (1:9.0.1-15+b1)
End-Date: 2021-02-18 23:26:26
===================

However, my system still cannot find an apt dist-upgrade path. Let me know
if there's anything I can do to help debug this.

Best,
Jaap
