After upgrading to openoffice 3.1.1 - word documents do not open in OpenOffice.org from web-based email due to them being sent as application/x-ole-storage.
I've tested it with iceweasel and epiphany-browser. If the file is sent as application/msword, then it opens fine in openoffice.org.
Packages also involved with mime types: shared-mime-info libgnomevfs2-common
Mime types as application/x-ole-storage worked find with openoffice in debian etch. This is a new problem in debian lenny.
To duplicate the problem:
* Open up a webmail-based email in Iceweasel.
* Find an email with an Word Document attachment that has mimetype set to application/x-ole-storage
* When you try to open the file openoffice.org is not an option.
I need a fix at the global mimetype level - not at the browser-user-interface level.

Try with a version supported by this BTS. (either 2.4.1 from lenny
or 3.1.1-x from testing/unstable). Bugs specific in bpo versions
are not subject to this bug tracker.

That sounds a bug in whatever sends those emails.

Good.

Ah, right. Sure. Did you really mean Debian lenny (that would mean
2.4.1) or lenny-backport of OOo which you have installed? (3.1.1)?
And how please should the mimetype -> app mapping know whatever x-ole-storage
is? It can be anything, can it?

You seem to assume everyone has that crap.

With crap I meant x-ole-storage.

Understandable.

True.

Surprise. That is not a backport bit a OOo - and that with a newer
shared-mime-info. Did you try using a newer shared-mime-info, too? Because
the latest Ubuntu just bases on the Debian packages and AFAIS has no
patches to OOo which do anything with x-ole-storage.
Can you please try with 3.1.1-x in either a squeeze or sid chroot? Just
to find out what is at fault here.

Who responded? Where? And why is this not recorded in the bug?

I don't have that file at all.

I talked with the Ubuntu maintainer last night as he's subprised too. To
his knoewledge, they don't have changes for x-ole-storage. Not even outside
of OOo.
Did you mistake Ubuntu 8.04 (the "latest" LTS) as the latest Ubuntu by chance?

always keep the bug in Cc to have it recorded in the buglog
(ooops, sent too early)
I installed Debian Lenny on a virtual machine
apt-get install kde iceweasel openoffice.org
The email with mime application/x-ole-storage *.doc opened fine in OpenOffice Writer.
I then installed openoffice.org from backports.
The email with mime Word doc as application/x-ole-storage worked fine.
So I'm guessing that somewhere along the upgrade from Debian Sarge=>Etch=>Lenny this mime type broke. As mentioned earlier this work-around-hack-fix works:

It is part of libgnomevfs2-common
You can close the bug report.
