Package: src:linux
Version: 5.10.92-1
Severity: important
X-Debbugs-Cc: simo...@gmail.com

Ever since sometime in the ~4.14-4.16 timeframe, the kernel hasn't liked the
usb3 xhci host controller. Before 4.14, I never had any issues with USB 3.0.
Between 4.14 and 5.10 I had to reboot about 4-5 times to get it to recognize my
USB 3 peripherals. Since upgrading to Debian 11 with 5.10, I've not been able
to make xhci work post boot at all.

If I boot up without any USB 3.0 devices plugged into USB 3.0 ports, everthing
is fine. I can then plug in the devices (some USB3.0 HDD enclosures), and for
~5-10 seconds they appear in lsusb and lsblk. Then dmesg shows: xHCI host
controller not responding, assume dead

After this the ports are unusable until a reboot.

I've looked at https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=236536 and
https://techoverflow.net/2021/09/16/how-i-fixed-xhci-host-controller-not-
responding-assume-dead/

I tried the following without success
1. unbind/rebind (bind outputs "file not found")
2. changing iommu settings (no change)
3. Rebooting 10 times, sometimes full power off, sometimes simple restart

I moved the USB 3.0 devices to USB 2.0 ports to bypass the issue for now, but
now my disk accesses are noticibly slower.

Oh, the debbugs kernel log above is useless, so here is a better one, plus a list of all of my reboots in the past few years. Note the occurrence of multiple reboots on each day only a few minutes apart. All eventually got USB3 to work, except for the most recent sequence (March 4/5.10.0-11/Debian 11) the 5.10 bpo kernel seemed to be rather bad too, with 10-15 reboots, compared to the 4.x kernels that only took ~4 reboots
