Package: open-vm-tools Version: open-vm-tools service (vmtoolsd) fails to start Severity: normal Dear Maintainer,

* What led up to the situation? Tried to start vmtoolsd

* What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? n/a

* What was the outcome of this action? Condition not met, start failed

* What outcome did you expect instead? vmtoolsd starts

The following condition caused the failure:

ConditionVirtualization=vmware was not met

After commenting it out vmtoolsd started successfully. For what it's worth, the same condition fails in VMware vmplayer.

-- System Information: Debian Release: bullseye/sid APT prefers testing APT policy: (990, 'testing'), (500, 'unstable') Architecture: amd64 (x86_64) Kernel: Linux 5.8.0-1-amd64 (SMP w/2 CPU threads) Kernel taint flags: TAINT_OOT_MODULE, TAINT_UNSIGNED_MODULE Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) (ignored: LC_ALL set to en_US.UTF-8), LANGUAGE not set Shell: /bin/sh linked to /usr/bin/dash Init: systemd (via /run/systemd/system) LSM: AppArmor: enabled

please run systemd-detect-virt and show the output, then install
systemd from buster-backports and run it again and see if it
makes a difference.

Reassigning to (only) open-vm-tools.

Kind regards,

Results of 'systemd-detect-virt' detect 'vmware' correctly in both VirtualBox and VMplayer:

$ systemd-detect-virt
vmware
