Package: xcalib
Version: 0.8.dfsg1-2
Severity: normal

Hi,

During summer months I use xcalib to invert colours so I can work on
free software despite the sun reflecting on my laptop's display.

This was working as late as August in Europe but not only do I find
myself in thesouthern hemisphere at the moment, xcalib does not appear
to be working:

$ xcalib -i
Error - unsupported ramp size 0

$ echo $?
255

I was about to do the same.

Seems like this package can have some love. If anybody can find a patch,
I'll do the (political) work to get it in.

Dear Chris and all,

A low-vision user has reported to me this issue yesterday. It is a
enormous regression appears on Stretch for a low-vision person that uses
xcalib to inverse the color of his screen.
I've added the a11y tag and raised the severity from normal to important.
I also can't use my computer without color inversion.

Best regards.

It seems upstream moved to github and a new release is available since
2014 already.

https://github.com/OpenICC/xcalib

No idea about the status of this bug in that version, but on github,
there are 0 bugs filed ever.

Found that patch at https://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-devel/2017-October/054991.html
solves the issue, at least for me.

It's a patch for X.Org, not for xcalib package. Xcalib is fine.

Patch was merged in [1]. It's not going to make into any 1.19.x releases, but most probably
will be included in 1.20.x. (I'm talking about X.Org, not xcalib). Then xcalib should work again.

Do you think we could backport it to Stretch? Should I move the bug from
xcalib package to X.org?

It definitely can be done, as the patch is very short, and there were no significant
changes around patched code for quite a long time. And yes, the first step should
be a bugreport against xserver-xorg-core package.

However, I'm in doubt. Will they update a package in a stable release?

Hello Paul,

As it should be fixed right now on xorg, could it be possible for you to
do the political work with Xorg maintainers to fix it on stable?

Best regards,
Alex.

Control: reassign -1 xserver-xorg-core
Control: retitle -1 X.org: [stretch] regression impacting accessibility tool xcalib
Control: tags -1 patch stretch
Control: forwarded -1 https://lists.x.org/archives/xorg-devel/2017-October/054991.html
Control: found -1 2:1.19.1-4
Control: fixed -1 2:1.20.0-1

Dear Debian X Strike Force,

Last year, bug 851810 was reported against xcalib. This program is an
accessibility tool that helps in low contrast situations to improve
readability. It turns out that the issue was in Xorg, not in the tool itself.

Rechtsanwalt James Adomako (Esq).
