Actually the socket /var/run/nscd/socket is created each time unscd is restarted.
Since I couldn't get rid of this message I reverted to nscd.
Then, when I read your answer I reinstalled unscd.
And I can't explain why, but I didn't see this message anymore when adding a user
to a group (but there is a lot of debug messages as described in #622230).
pitchum@belgarion:~$ LC_ALL=C sudo adduser pitchum staff
Adding user `pitchum' to group `staff' ...

Done.
However the error message still shows up when I restart the service:
pitchum@belgarion:~$ LC_ALL=C sudo service unscd restart
Restarting Micro Name Service Cache Daemon: unscdsent shutdown request, exiting
cannot connect to /var/run/nscd/socket
.

Yes, because that's how services using libnss connect to the caching
daemon. If you don't have that socket, there's no point.

We must realize that today's Establishment is the New George III.
Whether it will continue to adhere to his tactics, we do not know. If
it does, the redress, honored in tradition, is also revolution.
