Please provide a stack trace, I can't reproduce the problem here.
(e.g. run nvclock inside gdb, and do a 'bt full' after it crashed)

I can't reproduce the problem here. It's probably depending on the
graphics card used - nvclock hasen't been updated for a long time and
does not support the current ones. You should probably look into
nvidia-settings and see if that allows to change the desired options.

It does not: it only happens with driver newer than 290. Downgrading to 290 "solves" the issue

No true, at least in my case the bug shows for a very old graphic card where nvclock has been working for years
 
You should probably look into
nvidia-settings and see if that allows to change the desired options.

There is no setting for changing the backlight level in nvidia-setting
