You need jdk-1.1.7v1a and Swing-1.x
See the FAQ how to install.

BurnIT-1.5pre5 will switch to Makefiles and a configure script for easier installation.

If you can see your writer with:

cdrecord -scanbus

you should be ok kernel wise.
