1) Find a way to burn the full CD on a 74min blank anyways
2) Speed up the playback of the CD so that it fits in 74min.
3) Make MP3's of the whole disk and use them in one location.
My burner is an HP 7200i with the latest firmware upgrade.
Is there a way using any available burning tools, either under
Linux or under windows to burn a 78 minute disk onto a disc
claiming that it is 74 minutes (virtually all of them)?
I've got KAO silvergreen blanks and BASF gold, and BASF blue. Is
it possible to squeeze an extra 4-5 minutes on one of these?
If so how? I don't care if I need to use Windows or Linux, so
long as I can do it.
If that is not possible, I'd like to speed up the ripped wav
files with some utility, again in Linux or in windows - whichever
utility has the best sound quality. I looked at sox, but it
doesn't appear to be able to speed up or slow down files. I
calculated that I'd need to speed up the files by 6% in order to
fit the extra 4 minutes into 74 minutes. So, is there an easy
way? Also, is there a way to retain the pitch while speeding it
up? (I know the latter is really pushing it.
My current solution is MP3, which while it works ok, is kindof
limiting me to being stuck at the computer. No walkman. ;o(
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Wrong: There are 80 minute blanks. The actual price is from
2,95 DM to 5 DM - quite cheap. You can buy them in any
general store.

yes but not with your drive.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that there were no such thing as
blanks > 74m. What I meant is that - normal blanks are 74m, and
that is what I have.
>2,95 DM to 5 DM - quite cheap. You can buy them in any

I don't know what that translates to in CAN $ or US$. Over here
a general store is a convenience store that sells pop and chips,
and various other junkfood, plus overpriced grocery items. ;o)
I called every computer store in town here and nobody has 80m
blanks, about 95% of the stores said that I was crazy that there
is no such thing... I didn't argue the point with them.
I know that there are 80m blanks, but I can't get them here, and
the cheapest 74min blank locally is $3.00 CAN plus tax which
brings it to $3.45, which translates to around $4.90 US$. That
is a total ripoff IMHO. I go down to Toronto a couple times a
year and when I'm there I bring back a box of 100 or more blanks.
I get them for $1.75 retail down there, almost half price. Comes
to $2 with TAX.
I just had a friend call around in Toronto looking for 80m
blanks, and a lot of places said they don't stock and might not
be able to get them.
It would probably cost me around $20 or more for one disk unless
I bought a 100 or more...
So... Looks like I'm wanting to go with the squish audio by
speeding up plan...

Ok. Why not though? Is it a software limitation, or the drive
just isn't capable?
Also, I'd like to ask you a question. Since you have worked with
a number of drives, and since you have coded software for these
drives and know the ups/downs of the various drives...
What CDR do you personally recommend for various things? What
are the ups and downs of the various makes/models?
I researched it prior to buying and the HP drive was said to be
one of the best. I'm perfectly happy with it so far. No
problems at all, and it's done everything I've wanted it too.
Even if it died tomorrow, I've got my money's worth.
However... A friend who also has one, is considering getting
another one for his workplace. He was going to get the HP8100,
but if you can recommend some other drives, I'd be greatful to
check the specs out on them, and re-evaluate.
Anyone else is welcome to comment on it too. I particularly
would like to hear from people that are into coding the things
and know the problems pros/cons of various drives from a more
technical standpoint.
Thanks for your reply!

OK, 5DM is ~ 2.5 Euro

Sorry, I meant a store that sells everything. Food, clothings,
hadrware and electronic devices. I thought that "general store"
would be the right name.

Here in Berlin, you would find more than more than 3 shops that
sell 80minute blanks without having to drive more than 5 km.

This was true in Germany more than six months ago.

It's a firmware limitation.

If you like to overburn media, first have a look at the media capacity
list at:
http://www.fokus.gmd.de/research/cc/glone/employees/joerg.schilling/private/cd-cap.html
There you can see that we now have a bunch of different 80 minute media.
To be able to do overburning you need one of the following drives:
Track at once and Disk at once mode:
TEAC CD-R50S and CD-R55S
Panasonic CW-7502
Disk at once mode only:
Yamaha CDR-400 (only with new firmware)
Yamaha 2260
Yamaha 4260
Yamaha 4416
Plextor 4/12 (only with new firmware - may need a reset afterwards...)
Plextor 8/20
Plextor 4/2/20

Jörg, this is startling news! I've never been able to overburn even a
few seconds DAO with the 7502, and haven't ever heard of anyone else who
could - the drive just rejects the cuesheet before the burn. Neither
have I any success using TAO, although mythology has it that it a small
overburn can be done with CDWizard Pro 4.65 using its `direct write'
technolgy and ASAPI interface. Is some specific media type (eg TDK or
Taiko Yuden for which the drive has a predetermined write strategy)
required for OB with the 7502 or is there another secret?

OK, I never did a DAO test with the CD-7502 up to now.
However, I created many overburned CD's in TAO mode.
