Hi Everybody,

I'm trying to get netatalk running under Mandrake 7.2. I've compiled a
kernel to always include Appletalk DDP (not a module) and installed
Netatalk 1.4b2, and I get the message "Starting Appletalk services
(backgrounded)" when Linux boots.

However:

1. the command "dmesg | grep Apple -" returns nothing.
2. "ps aux" doesn't show atalk running
3. "/etc/rc.d/init.d/atalk start returns (from /var/log/messages):
atalkd: socket: Invalid argument
atalkd: socket: Invalid argument
atalkd: atalkd: can't get interface, exiting.
atalkd: atalkd startup failed

Can anybody suggest how I can get it all working, or what I'm doing wrong?

TIA,

--
Chris

If you don't see ANY AppleTalk message at system startup (or in dmesg
immediately after you've booted), then chances are the AppleTalk DDP
module is NOT loading. Here's what the message looks like on my system:

NET4: AppleTalk 0.18 for Linux NET4.0

If that or something very much like it isn't appearing when you boot,
then I suggest you review your kernel configuration, do a "make clean"
followed by a complete make cycle, re-install, and be sure you're
booting the correct kernel by double-, triple-, and quadruple-checking
the /etc/lilo.conf (or whatever) configuration.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I re-ran limuxconfig and discovered that it wouldn't let me complete the
kernel name entry (there seems to be a limit to the number of characters
that it will accept). I then followed the instructions in your book for
manual preparation and it worked!

Next, printing!

Great book, by the way. It's the one I refer to most frequently...

You compiled Appletalk support into the kernel, but you could try
loading the module manually to see if it works:

insmod appletalk

I'm using a standard RedHat 6.2 version, so your kernel is different.
But it wouldn't hurt to give it a try.

good luck!
