What's necessary to get connected through isp

Hi. I installed debian woody with the bf2.4 kernel. My modem wasn't
recognized during installation, so I got a driver and think I have it
successfully installed. Now exim was left broken, no configuration was done.
My question is this: do I need exim (because I have no idea on how to
configure it) in order to send and receive mail through my ISP. If I do, can
anyone direct me somewhere I can find how to easily configure for a dialup
isp without having to read a huge tome. Thanks.
