Respected sirs and researchers.
I am Raja Mukhopadhyay a graduate in computer science and engineering currently pursuing my masters degree in Information Technology. I went through your projects on the GSOC 2018 website and was pleased to find that my research interests closely align with that of yours. I have been working to build a smart IDS system that identifies DDOS attacks in advance and provides an alternative way to send packets into the network leaving out the malicious ones. Apart from these I have worked in a number of security projects like Data encryption in VM transfer over cloud network. I mainly carry out my simulations in OMNET++ and have been doing well in presenting novel ideas.

I would like to participate in the GSOC 2019 and would like to work with this research group on a novel research problem and help myself get acquainted with the research group. I shall therefore like to ask you whether we can start working from now and collaborate on some small projects. I am pretty skilled in C and C++ programming languages and am well aware of the modern technologies like DOCKER and DDBMS like Cassandra and MongoDB.

I hope for a positive reply from you'll so that I can have a good chance of getting into your research group in the future.

Thanks and regards,
Raja Mukhopadhyay

Hi Raja,

Glad to hear that you are interested in our research group and GSoC projects! You are welcome to start working from now and collaborate on some small projects!

The following section in our wiki is a good start:

Besides that reading past code reviews of merged pull requests is very helpful. You can find them here: https://github.com/AltraMayor/XIA-for-Linux/pulls?q=is%3Apr+is%3Aclosed

An alternative entry point to our project is Gatekeeper, our DDoS protection system (https://github.com/AltraMayor/gatekeeper). Gatekeeper and XIA are not integrated, and this integration will take quite a while. I'm mentioning Gatekeeper for two reasons:

1. Thanks to changes that GitHub has been doing, we have made all code review of merged pull request public in the Gatekeeper repository; this was not viable in the past, so a lot of good information was lost for XIA. Reading those code reviews will teach you a lot.

2. Listing Gatekeeper's issues (https://github.com/AltraMayor/gatekeeper/issues), you'll find issues marked with the tag "good first issue", which are good small projects to get going.

For GSoC 2019, we are still working on ideas for the projects now.

Best,
Qiaobin

Thanks for the wonderful advice. Should I update my progress to you after definite intervals of time. That way you can check my progress and ascertain my qualities as a developer.

Hoping for a response.

Sounds great! Whenever you make some progress, you are welcome to share it with our community via the mailing list.

Moreover, keeping your progress in a personal technical blog or Github repository is good practice according to our previous GSoC projects.

If you have any questions, let us know!

Best,
Qiaobin

If I build a network on OMNET++ simulation tool can I port or transfer that network to XIA environment. Does XIA also provide scope to test out the security attacks possible in a network?
