I'm really hoping to work this out, because from what i've seen running the live CD, this is exactly what I want to get an old PC up and running for my niece and nephew (more familiar because of it's Mint background than Puppy -- I couldn't ever get anything I wanted to run on that amazingly light distro)

I have the swift-lite iso burned to CD.

Installing to a 10GB HD with a 9.5GB ext3 partition and a 500MB swap.  HP laptop with a duron processor and 256MB ram.

GUI installer seems to do it's thing without error -- however it never CONFIRMS it has finished, it just closes, but without error.  I don't know if this is good or bad, so this is the first mystery to anwer.

I'm getting the following kernel panic during this part of the boot:

List of all partitions:
No filesystem could mount root, tried:
Kernel panic -- not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
Pid: 1, comm: swapper Not tainted 2.6.39-2-486 #1

This is followed by a call trace, which I will type out if necessary, but if there is enough info here to diagnose or suggest, I'd rather not.
Also, the CAPSLOCK and SCROLL LOCK indicators above the keyboard are flashing.

I don't know if this is going to some error log that I could capture, if so, please point me in the right direction.

I've tried installing grub from a different LIVE CD just to make sure that wasn't the issue, and the same thing happened.

Any ideas?  Thanks.

Couple general hints here:

Use wget or curl to download. Most web-browsers will sometimes
silently fail to complete a download even when they have allocated the
entire file-size (so it appears the download completed since the file
is big).

Use the slowest burn speed. Optical media will usually burn better at
lower speeds.

Use UNetBootin to boot from USB instead.
