Questions about new install of Swift Linux

I just stumbled across Swift Linux the other day while Googling some Linux stuff. I downloaded the iso and made a bootable flash drive via unetbootin. What I’ve seen so far I REALLY like. My Compaq Presario dual core laptop is the only box I have unetbootin installed on, and when I rebooted the computer to test the install, it booted in 15 seconds! Now I have in mind to run this on two much older boxes: a Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop (Pentium III, 20 GB hard drive, 512 MB RAM), and an old emachines T1090 (20 GB hard drive, 512 MB Ram, don’t know the specs on the Celeron processor).
I started with the Dell. It booted just fine, but I had the same graphics problem I always have with any version of Ubuntu or Debian. The initial desktop is split into multiple layers (in this case 2), and the resolution tops out at 1024 x 768 and while this always works fine for Puppy Linux, apparently I need a higher one here. This prompted a couple of questions I had about this OS:
1.) Is there a way to dial in a higher resolution or can I start up in “Safe Graphics Mode” or some other form of Xvesa? (this always worked well in Watt OS and Zorin.) I tried starting up in “Compatibility Mode” and it made no difference.
2.) Is this OS persistent after a hard shut down or sudden loss of power? One of my main gripes about Puppy is that after a loss of power, I get stuck in “shell hell” and usually have to reinstall.
3.) Will Iceape be automatically updated through the Update Manager, or do you get caught in that Debian “Backports” thing? I never had much luck with that.
4.) In a previous encounter with Debian, after an update and running “Bleachbit”, I ended up in a command line shell staring at a stick figure of a reindeer. Hopefully this is a little more stable?
