To add, here is a page from the "Linux System Administrator's Guide" on Partitions: http://www.faqs.org/docs/linux_admin/x1139.html

and a comprehensive guide on how to plan your partitions: http://www.lissot.net/partition/

It's one of these things you need hands-on experience with to feel confident about, especially if you're not familiar with CLI tools like fdisk. Use a virtual machine to create, recreate and re-recreate some partitions. It helps!
