Most of people are reluctant in moving to linux because they dont want
to mess up with installation of .deb , .rpm files on linux. Yes thats
upto some extant true, software installation on linux is not easy and
it takes sometimes to get used of it.
But what most of all doesnt know is that linux do allow installation
of .exe files.
there is a utility called wine (wine is actually a program loader,
that allows program written for Windows to run over Linux).
in this article i am going to write about installation of WINE on
fedora core 8.
actually its very much easy to install wine if u do have internet
connectivity.
step 1 press Alt + f2 and write gnome-temina
step 2 $yum install wine
after that installation will begin.
after installation issue following command
step 3 $winecfg
this will open setting menu of menu you can leave that setting for now
as they are (running winecfg will create folder ~/.wine that will
contain Windows applications you install and run).
thats it you have installed wine and now you can install any .exe file
in fedora core 8.
i place gom.exe file on my Desktop and issue following command from
gnome-teminal for installation
$wine ~/Desktop/Gom.exe
after then a window installtion guide will appear and you can easily
proceed with that!

We will soon cater to your needs.
And it is possible to install MS Office in linux.
You'l have to use "Project Wine" and "Crossover Office Pro".
It might crash occassionally though.

Welcome Mike on Linux Pakistan. sathish has answered half of your
question. About linux file system. Linux considers everything as a
file here hardware devices are files (you can view them in /dev
folder). Linux commands are also files and even your hard drives are
also treated as file. In linux there is a root directory / and every
thing follows this. There is excellent resource for learning linux
file system. go through it and do let us now if u have any query

WSaalam and welcome Uni to Linux Pakistan
sorry it takes sometimes to respond to your query.
Linpus Linux is a light weight fedora based OS. It is designed to work
with low cost hardware.
The guide which i have written on top should work for Linpus Linux as
well. do try that. in case you find any problem following that guide
do let us know!!!
best regards
