Hey guys!

I just got a Macbook Pro 11,5 from work and I put Fedora on it. I spent the last couple days trying to get things working. I found this mailing list and the website after I had already spent hours combing the internet and fixing as much as I could! It's a great resource and I'm glad you are all working so diligently.

So the office gave me a Thunderbolt display to use but I can't hotplug it. I updated to the newest kernel available (4.4.0.0) and the thunderbolt outputs are working, but not the display. If I have it plugged in at boot time it seems to work fine. I had noticed the Thunderbolt bug that had been submitted, but what about the display? Does anyone know what the issue may be? I would be glad to try to debug the issue and get a fix but getting as much information as possible to assist me would be appreciated.

AFAIK there was a fix to kernel 3.19 to allow Thunderbolt hotplugging, so you should have it.

However, I can't speak to the actual underlying issue, as I'm not really sure how a Thunderbolt display differs from Mini DisplayPort. Are there just data lanes accompanying DP lanes to the monitor?

Thanks,

Hi Sarah, thanks for the email.

I like thunderbolt hotpugging for some dongles like Ethernet was fixed
in kernel version 4.4 via this kernel bug:

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=100191

Unfortunately, if you look at comment 28, the thunderbolt-based display
adapters are still not hotpluggable. I don't have one of these to try it
myself, but I'd suggest opening a new bug. Between the above bug and
perhaps this one...

https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=104971

...I think you have enough to go on! If you do create a bug, please let
us know and we'll track it!

hope this helps

Good news. This is fixed in the new RC of Kernel 4.4 as per the bugzilla thread.
