I found a thread about this issue at http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.scsi.target.devel/376. I am having the same error spewed in the kernel logs and lockup at the ESXi 5.0 host storage:

WRITE_SAME w/o UNMAP bit not supported for Block Discard Emulation

Just curious if there are plans to fix the compatibility with vSphere 5 in release 4.0? Would be a nice feature to have. I am really liking targetcli and LIO 4 and am hoping to use it in production in the future. If there is anything a normal user like me can do I would be glad to help. Thanks!

Hi Andy,

Currently the target does not contain generic support for this feature,
but there are some commercial products that ship target-core that do
support this logic using a passthrough method.

So in order to get working with ESXv5, you'll need to disable the
hardware acceleration using:

esxcli --int-value 0 --option /DataMover/HardwareAcceleratedInit

--nab

P.S: Also just FYI, target...@vger.kernel.org is the main list for
target development.
