I really want to do some localization, but not sure what to do and how. Can someone guide me?

If you don't have a specific project in mind I would suggest translation of xfce. It is a light weight desktop environment that can be used by older computers that are still running win xp and ridden with virus in Ethiopia. It is also one of the easiest projects to start with. I have translated a good deal but have fallen back due to time constraints and you may continue from there. Here is a link to instructions. wiki.xfce.org/translations

Great. Now you have joined you can download the po file and start translating. better to translate the development branch,

You can of course lock the file until you submit back the translated po file so that others can pick another one. The best practice is if you have one hour to translate then download a file, lock it, work on it , submit back, and unlock. It is better to download new file every time since the main file can change.

Is it possible for you to tell which upstream projects are worth translating so that the general end product will have a fair amount of translation? I stopped translating in Ubuntu; there's no point translating text that would not stick around after six months. I was thinking  perhaps Gnome or KDE or even Unity itself if the separate section for it in Launchpad.

You raised an important point. I don't think we should waste time on transient and temporary ones.

Thank you for letting me in to XFCE. Do you know of the best Amharic-English dictionary? If I remember correctly you composed a list of translation tools while we were at Google-Amharic. Can we have some sort of collection here? The excel file from AAU was very helpful for me while doing little work at OLPC. Is that project still in need of localizers (Amharic)? http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC_Amharic_Keyboard

The attachment Eyob sent has more or less complete info on Ethiopian localization. Including the dictionaries. 

There are some upstream projects hosted on lounchpad (canonicals project site including ubntu). but others are not. many including xfce use transfifex. translating in ubuntu is not advisable unless they are canonicals projects.
I am not sure about unity since it is based gnome.

Daniel Yaqob is the Gnome Amharic translation coordinator. KDE I am not sure on it's status. Each project has a section on localization that points where the translation is done.

As I said I have fallen back on some of the projects due to time constraint. I think the est way is to see at the project sites if there is any change.
