so, i finally set up a WUBI dualboot of Ubuntu on my HP TX2 Laptop,
only to find that the drivers don't support my video card. i rebooted
into (Certain closed-source OS...Would mention it by name, but i don't
want to invoke any holy wars), found Linux drivers, copied them over
to a thumb drive, rebooted into linux and followed the install
instructions, but i only get to compiling the drivers (something which
confuses me -- why do you have to compile them yourself?!) but MAKE
terminates with Error 2. here's the terminal log:

i'm not used to the terminal quite yet, can someone explain what's
wrong to me? i have more then 4GB RAM and a AMD Turion X2, so i should
use the x64 driver, but Ubuntu doesn't seem to like the driver. is
there a 64-bit version of Ubuntu out there?

So you are trying to install 64bit drivers on a 32bit OS?
You need to have those match. Either get the 64bit os or get the 32bit drivers.

I highly recommend you install the 32-bit version of Linux Mint.

It's a superior product - yet still Ubuntu.

Yeah, but MINT doesn't have WUBI, and last time i tried to partition a
hard drive i fried the MBR, and i'd rather not have to reload any
backups off my home server if i don't have to.

I installed the 32bit driver (some SUDOing was involved), but it still
doesn't recognize the damn wireless card!

This is really more work than it should be...at least it seems to me.  What kind of video card is it?  The Mint (or ubuntu) partitioning process on dual boot is pretty easy.  They have nvidia and ati driver install with two clicks and I have yet to find a wireless card or chipset that wasn't recognized.  My hat off to the wubi team but it really isn't the full Linux monty.  If you want, I can walk you through it by phone, I don't mind.  If you just want the Linux experience via live cd, you can run the cd and choose to save your changes to a thumb drive.  That way, when you boot,, it will continue where it left off.  Either way you do it, it's superior to Wubi.  By the way, Wubi was meant to just show some of the Linux features, not really a full speed Linux experience.  Unless they've made major changes from a month ago, Wubi tends to be pretty buggy and a major pita to get your drivers installed.  Not really the optimal Linux experience.

Hmm...well, i'm really nervous about partitioning (even though i'd
just restore from nightly backup if i screw up), maybe i'll practice
on one of my "expendable" computers (my laptop running MINT, two old
HP Pavilions with 512mb RAM) first.

The video is running at the proper resolution and sound is working
too, it's just the touchscreen and wireless that aren't working.

This is the laptop: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ie/en/ho/WF06a/321957-321957-3329744-3835813-3835813-3999427.html

And here's the article i'm using (there's a link to the drivers i used
in it...SERIOUSLY, WHY WOULD YOU HAVE TO COMPILE THE DRIVER
YOURSELF?!): http://www.touchsmartdevzone.com/article/1940/How-To-Install-Linux-on-HP-TouchSmart-tx2-1250/

In ubuntu there is a touchscreen calibration tool that you can install to get the touchscreen. I can't remember the name of the package, but you could search the software center for it.

Also, it sounds like you are scared of compiling. Compiling is just another way to install. You would have to install the drivers with Windows or MacOS. So with that in mind you are not doing anything out of the ordinary.

LOL...I was trying to politely say that compared to an install or even a live CD, Wubi pretty much sucks.

Well thanks for helping, everybody. i'll probably just get a dedicated
linux laptop from System76 this summer. until then, for my Linux needs
i'll just stick to my old Gateway MX6930. besides, if i wanted to do
anything really CPU/RAM intensive i'd do it on my main PC.

You might want to check out the laptop from ZaReason, which is my Linux hardware provider of choice -- http://www.zareason.com -- as they make great machines and are also great people to boot.

Yes, I heartily second the Zareason option.  Not only are their prices competitive...how many companies can say that their top execs insist on personally handling any support inquires and assistance for help requests?  While other companies accentuate growth as their primary goal, Zareason experiences growth through their superior customer service philosophies.

You can't beat those guys.

I third the Zareason option.  I know them personally, and they are good, trustworthy people.

Try Presto Linux. It should work and it's Debian-based. Sets up dual
boot and everything for you.

Okay, i'll check those out some time. sorry about the whole compile
thing, i assumed it was referring to compiling it like you would with
Visual C++ or something.
