The first thing for you to do is to try to see if the sounds align in time with anything outside. Does the sound occur when the outdoor temperature changes some amount (or more? Does the sound occur when the sun starts to hit the wall? When the sun stops hitting the wall? When you run the hot water? When the heat or air conditioning starts, or stops?

If you have sounds from water pipes, the sound should align with running probably hot, or maybe cold water. The sound may lag when you actually run the water by a few minutes since the pipes need to either get hot or get cold before they will expand or contract enough to make a sound.

Well, back to add a guess. Your sound has a soft start then three major peaks. The lifting truss noise I have heard is more often than not a single bang. Fairly sharp definition, no repeats. The CPVC piping I had in an early home would make a fairly long series of "tik tik tik tik" when drawing hot water. I greased the plastic clips that held the pipe and all went quiet. The big PVC drain that passed through a joist and dragged a bit sounded much the same, only lower pitch. Teflon tape slipped under the contact point fixed that.

The sound you have recorded and presented leads me to guess a partial plugged vent or trap that is being emptied in a cyclic manner, perhaps through suction effect. Are you new to the home or later owner? Any memories of toys or clothing that got sent down the plumbing by accident?

The tests I would suggest, if a one story house, is run sink, toilet, tub in separate cycles to see which one sets off the thumps. It may be several minutes between running water and the sound appearing. If more than one bathroom, start with the one furthest from the vent stack if you can determine where that is. For a two story, check the upstairs sink, then tub, then toilet, waiting several minutes between each fixture.

You can check if it's pipes by running hot or cold water after it's not been run for a while. Pipe banging tends to happen when pipes either heat up or cool off quickly. Thermal-related pipe banging is usually a sort of "snap ... snap ... snap" sound that is periodic in nature, and gradually tapers off once the pipe has warmed up or cooled off all the way.

Thanks, Bill. I have ruled out the roof, and there are no trees or loose gutters. Pipe or duct sounds carried by the framing could be a good line of investigation. I'm definitely aware of pipe issues as my water heater is 16 years old - and it's the eternal question of should I replace it. We get a rumbling sound connected to my wife's shower usage, not to mine. I wouldn't liken it to a "snap ... snap" - and nor is there a muffled "Bang!" It's simply like a piece of metal or wood striking a pipe, and it's right in the bedroom wall next to where my head lies. Great!

I agree that temperature is likely driving expansion of something that pops. You mention a wall was removed 7 yrs ago, has the sound been with you since that time? You need to clarify the type of siding and sun exposure levels. Also, does the pitch of the roof face morning sunlight? If it is an east facing wall or roof, the morning sun load could drive enough warmth in fast enough to make the sheathing expand. If just the wall is catching sun, siding noises tend to be lots of little snaps and pops if aluminum. Vinyl is similar but duller in pitch. A single pop is not too likely unless there is just one piece snagging on a trim edge.

A single large thump once a day suggests a truss end(s) at the top plate. It could be the roof sheathing was set dead tight on a cold day when constructed. The sun hitting the roof could warm the plywood enough to make it snap into a curve to relieve the expansion stress. Not much of a curve, but enough to "pop". The truss(es) might be shifting slightly with the plywood and amplifying the sound thanks to the ceiling drywall. Having removed an interior wall may have expanded the drywall area subject to shifting which enhanced the effect.

Through this, I realized that the sound of rain is comprised of the sound of millions of bubbles merging each second to form a spectrum resembling a noise-like sound (pink noise, to be more precise).

Based on this idea, I created a prototype of dynamic rain in Ableton Live using Serum. I split the whole sound into a few layers:

1. Light high-frequency boiling
2. Mid-frequency boiling
3. Stereo noise
4. Individual raindrops

To make it more realistic, I cross-referenced my prototype with a sample of recorded rain.

And here is the actual sound recorded from my listening spot with 17 cm space microphone placed near the ear. You could hear it going directly from left to right with slight sensation slightly behind your head when it crosses your head. I may have figured out a better way to do crosstalk cancellation . Would anyone be interested to work with me to turn this into a product? Please let me know if you want to demo it for yourself. I have the prepossessed file which you can play in your current system. The YouTube would not create the effect as it was a recording of sound that is heard at my listening spot but the separation from left to right can be heard clearly with headphones.

After reading all the comments above, I listened to Too Much Rope again just out of curiosity. I like the whole album and most tracks contain great effects that on good systems always manage to surprise and startle the listener.

Listening to this track with a little more intent I was shocked to discover that the sound of sleigh starts way out to my left and it completely envelops me as it moves across all the way to the right of me with amazing depth.

I'm sitting quite close to my big ATCs and with no effects applied, just straight forward stereo.

It extends well beyond the left and right speakers in perfect line (curve), the sound is very well defined and so easy to follow from left to right. Not sure about the degrees but it sounds more surround than stereo, amazing really.
I get that with a lot of similar effects. ATCs are well known for tremendous sound stage and depth.

Seems the Savage voice set is bugged rather badly since the last patch, after loading my single player save, minus the bubbling sounds, every sound effect and voice is distorted and muffled, making them sound like the player is underwater. Of course to add to it, my character makes absolutely no sound during battle or when landing from a slight fall, and to add to it, quitting the game and re-loading the save does not help fix this irritating issue.

Drop impact on a water surface can be followed by underwater sounds originating not at the drop impact but when the entrained bubbles oscillate. Although the sound mechanism in the regular bubble entrainment region is well-known, there is less knowledge on the impact phenomena in the irregular bubble entrainment region where various situations can exist, such as many types of bubble formation or even no bubble generation under some conditions. In the present study, the aim is to clarify the dynamics of the water surface after the impact of a primary drop, mainly with diameter 5.2, 5.7 and 6.2mm, each of which is accompanied by a single satellite drop. Special attention was paid to the breakup behaviour of the water surface for Froude number Fr < 300. It was found that three underwater sounds were generated for a single drop impact, besides the sound due to impact itself. The first two were audible to the human ear, but the third one was almost inaudible. The first underwater sound resulted from the oscillation of a single air bubble formed as a result of the satellite drop impact on the bottom of the contracting cavity, and the second sound was due to the oscillation of air bubbles generated during the collapse of the water column. The formation of these air bubbles strongly depends on the Froude number, Weber number (or Bond number) and the aspect ratio of the drop at impact, although involving probability characteristics. Furthermore it is suggested that an air bubble entrapped in a water column plays an important role in increasing the probability of contact between the column surface and the curved free surface. A Japanese Suikinkutsu was introduced as an application of drop-impact-induced sounds. Using an open-type Suikinkutsu an additional experiment was carried out with larger drops with average diameters of 6.2, 7.2 and 7.8, mm.
