ESP32 is much cheaper and has a more powerful CPU. Not sure if ESP32 has the needed pins though.
Has anyone used ESP32 to replace Teensy 3.2?

Yes it is possible to use an ESP32. You would have to port the code. I had done it with an arduino uno somewhere around 2017 -18. so it should be possible.
