The European Union has banned over 1,300 chemicals in skincare; on the other hand, the U.S. has banned 8. Whoa. A little concerning, eh? One study that was done showed that women put an average of 515 chemicals on their skin per day. (Source)
So many of our products today contain cancer-causing and endocrine-disrupting chemicals. It really makes you think if the products we use could be one of the causes of hormone imbalance and so many of the health issues that women (and men) struggle with nowadays.
Remember that second possible ingredient? Essential oils. Now you can add a few drops of skin-benefiting essential oils like geranium (can help fine lines), tea tree (helps acne-prone skin), frankincense (also helps fine lines), or others.
Personally, I like to add a few drops of calming essential oils like lavender and chamomile because one, it smells amazing, and two, I use this homemade makeup remover in the shower at night, so it helps me wind down before bed.
Phytosterols from Wheat Germ Extract and Plant Ethers dissolve all traces of eye make-up and waterproof mascara. Azulene, from German Chamomile Extract, and Tocopherol Vitamin E soothe and hydrate the skin. Naturally-derived Protec-3 Complex acts as a cellular shield, protecting facial skin from heavy metals and particle matter (hazardous dust, pollen, soot, smoke and liquid droplets) while detoxing Lipid/Fibroblast cells from irreversible DNA damage caused by oxygen, nitrogen and carbon-free radicals, visibly improving skin texture around the eyes.
Shake well to activate this formulation, then apply generously to a cotton pad and press gently onto closed eye lids, in an outward motion, repeating until the last traces of makeup and mascara have dissolved. Complete this cleansing treatment with your preferred Grown Alchemist facial cleanser. Perfectly safe for contact-lens-wearers.
The biphasic lotion makes makeup removal gentle and effective. As its name suggests, it is composed of a mixture of aqueous and oily solutions. Discover in more detail in this article the composition of a biphasic makeup remover.
The biphasic lotions are cosmetic products used for removing makeup from the skin. They are highly valued because they are particularly effective at removing water-resistant or long-lasting makeup. Biphasic makeup removers combine the benefits of both micellar waters and makeup removing oils.
Denser than the oil phase, the aqueous phase forms the lower phase of a biphasic lotion. It is typically based onhydrosol. Less concentrated than essential oils, hydrosols are gentle ingredients that are very well tolerated by the skin. Among the most commonly used hydrosols to formulate a biphasic makeup remover, we find those of orange blossom (INCI: Citrus Aurantium Dulcis Flower Water), Damask rose (INCI: Rosa Damascena Flower Water), lavender (INCI: Lavandula Angustifolia Flower Water) and cornflower (INCI: Centaurea Cyanus Flower Water).
This can be supplemented with actives such as vitamins, amino acids, or minerals. They provide an additional property to the makeup remover, making it more hydrating or soothing. Finally, it is in this phase that we find the preservatives, important molecules in a cosmetic product, as they help prevent microbial contamination and extend the product's shelf life. Preservatives are preferably added in the aqueous phase, as water is a naturally more conducive environment for the growth of fungi, bacteria, mold...
The majority of the oily phase is made up ofvegetable oils, which are rich in fatty acids. Vegetable oils have beneficial properties for this type of care because their texture allows them to gently remove makeup without damaging the skin.
Biphasic makeup removers often contain several different vegetable oils, such as those of jojoba (INCI: Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil), ofsweet almond (INCI: Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil), of apricot kernels (INCI: Prunus Armeniaca Kernel Oil) or ofavocado (INCI: Persea Gratissima Oil).
These vegetable oils have skin-softening properties and serve as natural thickeners. To enhance their effect, silicones or other emollients are sometimes added to the oil phase of biphasic makeup removers, such as isopropyl myristate or caprylic/capric triglyceride.
At Typology, we have formulated a biphasic makeup remover that is gentle and suitable for the eye contour. Its aqueous phase is primarily composed of pea peptides (INCI: Pisum Sativum (Pea) Peptide) and chamomile hydrosol (INCI: Chamomilla Recutita Flower Water). The pea peptides work by strengthening and densifying the eyelashes. The chamomile extract , on the other hand, has soothing properties on the thin and delicate skin around the eyes.
In the oily phase of our two-phase makeup remover, we find a blend ofcastor oils (INCI: Ricinus Communis Seed Oil), sweet almond (INCI: Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil) and rice bran (INCI: Oryza Sativa Germ Oil). Each of these oils brings different benefits to the eye contour. The castor oil strengthens and fortifies the eyelashes. The sweet almond oil has nourishing and soothing properties for the skin. As for the rice bran oil, it has a light texture that hydrates and soothes the eye contour.
Micellar water is a cleansing water that contains tiny droplets of cleansing oil molecules. Makeup, dirt and grime is attracted to the oil molecules and you swipe them away with a cotton pad. Micelle facial cleansing is a gentle way to remove impurities and is safe for all skin types. Micellar water contains mainly water, a very mild surfactant and oil.
A few weeks after I made this recipe, we lost power in our home and both my daughter and I needed to remove our makeup and cleanse our skin for bed. We are on a well so when the electricity goes out, there is no water. Sofie and I were both relieved to have my micellar water on hand and it worked in a pinch with zero water.
If you'd like to add witch hazel to give this product toning action as well as cleansing action, cut the rose water in half and add 1/2 cup of witch hazel. I love using Thayer's witch hazel. It's alcohol free and affordable. Plus, I love the different scents-rose is my favorite! This recipe is easy and straight forward all though the lecithin was tricky to work with. It has a thick honey consistency and does not dissolve quickly or easily. I tried heating it in the liquid and found this was an unnecessary effort that didn't work well enough to advise you to do it. Blending did the best job but I noticed bits of lecithin remained. While you could strain them out, I didn't feel it was necessary and noticed that within a few days the bits of lecithin dissolved. If you plan to use this as an eye makeup remover, I suggest leaving out the essential oils.

The objective of this study was to determine the safety of rubber seed oil in terms of toxicity, residual solvent and to develop rubber seed cleansing oil as a makeup remover. The cytotoxicity of rubber seed was determined on human fibroblast cell. It was not cytotoxic to human fibroblast cell at >1000 g/ml. Rubber seed oil was further examined for the presence of linamarin toxin and determining the solvent residual. FTIR spectrum revealed that there was no presence of cyanide peak and, n-hexane residual was 60.35 1.12 ppm. Based on these results, it was suggested that rubber seed oil was safe to be developed as a product for cosmetic applications. The rubber seed cleansing oil was formulated in various compositions of rubber seed oil (5, 10 and 15%) combined with sorbeth-30 tetraoleate (HLB 11.5) and sorbitan sesquioleate (HLB 3.7) and the ratio of surfactant was 10, 15 and 20% respectively. The most suitable formulation with good physical properties was obtained from 5% of rubber seed oil, and 15% of surfactant. The makeup removal efficacy of rubber seed cleansing oil was 89.89 2.75% against the liquid foundation.
