I am starting to gather parts for a new engine and because the prizes for original heads and the work and parts that have to be added are completely insane (at least here in Germany), I am looking for aftermarket heads.
I'm not saying they aren't made in China, but they are not the likes of your ProComp or Speedmaster. I would hazard a guess their Cleveland heads are a relatively new product line as there are no reviews to be found and the likes of Summit Racing etc. don't carry them yet. The reviews on their other heads are pretty positive. Somebody has to be first to try them and report back!
George HI
did rebuild an Cleveland from stock to "modern" update under German cost aspects ..and followed George P`s detail description. Du to same as I read issue on German cost to manufacturer I did go Trick flow 195 with Hydro roller and 10:5 static. Engine runs Impressively. strong.
1) if you need I have 2 original 4V Heads open chamber coming from a turbo jet 1976. Heads are in running condition.
2) Ren a fellow from France did modify stock heads in France , he has all details on modifying the heads and make them more "aggressive" as adding lift , still hydro flat cam so my understanding. So you want to reach out to him , and there where some issues in positioning the rockers adequately. Think he had a machine shop on Elsass for a decent cost.(??)
3) I did go a different route, Trick flow heads, Hydro roller, New intake (needed modification as used the Edelbrock performer..mods on the openings per CD camera and blue print, milling the top angle of the intake to make it "flat" as OTC has an decent angle.....all this saves def 20..40 kg weight..
Just my two cents here but, this doesn't sound like a good company to be doing business with. I have had several sets of CHI cylinder heads and never had a problem with getting performance data about them. CHI also makes a 4V cylinder head for the Cleveland engine, which is expensive, but you sometimes get what you pay for.
You could contact Wilson Manifolds and see what they would charge to CNC-port a pair of anyone's 2V heads to a 4V size. They do this every day. Note that unless you are running a big-inch stroker Cleveland, 4V ports are usually considered too big for proper air velocity, or unless you regularly rev above 7000. Which is often disaster for a stock lower end.
I have run 2V intakes on 4V heads, and up to about 5000 rpms (near redline for a stock lower end) this works OK. At 5000-5200, power will nose-dive. If you don't plan to be up there in revs very often, a "mismatched" intake will do just fine. The big gains in aftermarket heads for non-pro-racers are the closed combustion chamber, the mechanical valve actuation system and the 32-lb weight savings each, not bigger valves and ports.
All in all, it sounds like your most economical approach may be to buy known 2V heads and a good matching intake, and sell your present intake on E-Bay rather than trying to reuse it. Good luck either way.
