Alex and I chatted with Christian Wimmer and Thomas Weurthinger at Oracle today, who are working on getting GraalVM (specifically SubstrateVM) working with Linkerd 1.x.

Some notes I took during the call:
  • They have a workaround for the static initializer issue, where Substrate will just run the static initializers at runtime.
  • With this workaround, they have a functioning Finagle hello world.
  • When attempting to run Linkerd, they are currently running into Jackson's YAML parsing. We suggested they just skip this for now for the purposes of building a POC.
The tentative goal is to get a basic functional POC (by modifying Linkerd, Finagle, Graal, and anything else standing in the way) that just handles HTTP traffic and can display the admin page, and put this up on a branch or repo clone in the Linkerd GitHub org. From there it can be opened up to the community and we can all start playing around with it.

So, in short, progress is being made, but there is not yet a place for broader contribution until a few more fundamental issues can be worked out.

(Alex, feel free to correct me on any of the details above.)

[Ooops, fixing the right linkerd-dev alias.]

There's nothing up on GitHub yet. I'll post here the moment it happens. We told them everyone is very eager for something to try out. :)

Are there branches that we can clone to try out on our local machines?
