Hello everybody,

I would like to start a discussion about how to exploit the existing LOD base for the academic world, with a focus on the library data.
We are in WorldCat, so much of our metadata is available as Linked Data.
We would like to mash up this data with other informations, ideally with some form of a search engine.
However it seems to me, as a newbie, that the technology is not yet mature enough to support the ordinary user directly.
There seems to be many thematic projects around, though.
So, which will be the killer application that will ignite LOD in the academic world?

Dear Vincenzo,

Have you looked at what we did at the University of Muenster? http://lodum.de/life/.

I am interested to discuss your questions in the context of library work we are starting at UCSB. Here we have slightly different goals, using LOD only marginally at the beginning. But I still believe LOD is a key enabler for sharing and integrating research data. I don’t know about killer apps, but semantic search for research data across domains is a pretty strong case for LOD.

It's not a killer app, but having linked data for the id, name and location of all our buildings has meant we could use it to augment many other datasets by putting building numbers on a map.

Other important thing for us was finding some ID schemes that were not public and advertising their existence.

Dear Werner,
thank you for the hints from your activities.
It seem that you already have a pretty big chunk of available data!
Our main problem is that we only have WorldCat. So we are looking for some other data to start mashing up.
The other problem is not being skilled in the IT field.... that leads me to MashQL (http://sina.birzeit.edu/mashql/), a very promising tool for mashing up.
Unfortunatly I couldn't set it up due to problems with Java (any work-around?).

Yes, we tried to use our textbook db, the idea being linking the course / professor to the relevant books in WorldCat.
Unfortunately a) the data is very dirt (unstructured free-text); b) we should query the db and publish it in RDF, wich is beyound our skills.
