Dear all
What metadata mapping tool do you use to map the data fields in your database onto linked.art ? I found  Karma, but it has not been updated for nearly 10 years and I was not able to install it on my Silicon Mac. Is it worth digging into it or are there more up-to-date tools?
Many thanks for your tips, Claudia

Hi Claudia,

We tried to use Karma during the American Art Collaborative project in 2014-2016, however the amount of transformation needed to get from a very flat catalog record to a very connected graph wasn't something it could handle without more effort than just writing the transformation code directly. So at the moment every organization has their own transformation and mapping routines.

There are some libraries and modules in various languages to help (see https://linked.art/software/) and there is interest in the community in the feasibility of generative AI based toolchains that can "understand" the flat record to normalize its data structure, and then use a shared transformation from the intermediate form.

And please feel free to ask mapping questions here, or on one of our community zoom calls :)

Dear Robert

Thank you for your friendly words and for your useful tips! I will check https://linked.art/software/ out. I have not noticed it yet, there is a lot of important stuff to read on linked.art ; )

Do you mean a record in a spreadsheet (like from a relational database) with a flat record ?

Best wishes

Claudia

Apologies, yes, a record that has very flat structure, such as a relational database table, as opposed to a very connected graph structure, or a very nested structure.

Linked Art records are a mix of nested structures (e.g. names) and graph structures (the relationships between records).
You could compare wikidata which is a flat structure (and thus has thousands of different properties) and graph (relationships), MARC records or dublin core records which are flat and string based, or XML which is nested but string based.
