Can I use the 16MB kernel to flash an 8MB flash memory?

Hello guys, I happen to have an OpenWRT board nearby and it has 8MB flash memory, I was wondering if I can flash openWRT right away. If not, does any one know where could I get an 8MB kernel firmware?
