A typologist meets discourse: Linguistics with a human face (Kako tipolog obravnava diskurz: Jezikoslovje s človeškim obrazom)

In this somewhat personal talk I will share my experience as a typologist increasingly interested in discourse categories, especially so-called “particles”. Using concrete examples from my own and others’ research, I will discuss methodological and even philosophical challenges I have faced along the way. I will discuss such problems as definitions of linguistic phenomena, the complex relations between “classical” linguistics, which typology is part of, vs. interactional and sociological approaches to language. I will touch upon the issues of areality, as well as the boundaries between language and non-language. In conclusion, I will present my view of linguistics “with a human face” which breaks with the radical Saussurean “systemic” view of language and learns from social sciences.
