Title: A Dynamic Semantic Analysis of Indefinite Interpretations in Russian Pronouns

Russian pronouns are ambiguous between definite and indefinite interpretations. When a pronoun is used indefinitely, it need not be interpreted as the same individual that satisfies its antecedent. Its number need not match either (except in cases where a singular pronoun takes a plural NP as its antecedent). Moreover, because a pronoun can receive an indefinite interpretation, it may take an antecedent that lies within the scope of negation. Although such behavior is not predicted by existing dynamic semantics or E-type approaches, Russian pronouns remain understudied in formal semantics. This paper proposes an account of these phenomena by extending Compositional DRT (Muskens, 1996) to allow indefinites to introduce discourse referents for predicates. When a pronoun is interpreted relative to an ordinary individual dref, it has a definite reading; when it is interpreted relative to a predicate dref, it receives an indefinite reading and introduces a new individual dref.
