Might I suggest that this list be monitored to obviate receiving spam and other unwanted matter?

Thanks for the suggestion, Bernard.
From my end I have reported the problem to Google but no response.

Google doesn't monitor groups - the owner or manager must set it for
monitoring and then do it. With a small group, it is also possible to
give free access to anyone you know and trust.

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm one of the moderators; I've removed all
of the offending messages and pages, and changed the settings so that:
a.) people who want to join the group must request and be approved for
membership, and b.) messages from new members must be approved.

Does this sound appropriate? If it sounds too draconian (or not
enough) the settings can be changed of course.

And, if anyone else would like to join as a moderator of the group,
please get in touch. Heiko's another of the moderators.

Best,

David

Dear David and all,

thank you for taking care about this issue - we're again in the middle
of
the semester start turbulences here in Latvia, so I was obviously too
slow
to react.

In addition, I think that I must have been cut off from the LL
discussions
for a while: As a consequence, I didn't get the call for the Siena
workshop
until two weeks ago - only to find out that it will take place on
exactly
the same days as a meeting of a research group on Language Rights in
Russia
and Europe which I had already agreed to attend a long time ago :-
( Which
puts me into the truely serious dilemma that I can't be in Italy and
Finland
at the same time - each of the meetings is sort of the major annual
meeting
of my two major research activities, both also connected with a bunch
of
lovely people involved whom I would like to see again - so it hurts a
lot
regardless whichever I (don't) choose to attend....

Anyway, sending you all the best and hope your work is progressing -
and
keep in touch anyway!

Dear David
Sounds a good idea to me. As you develop a core of trusted
correspondents, you will be able to give them permission to post
directly.
Best wishes
Bernard
