(

Candidates will be expected to write a short proposal for the
studentship, setting out their intended topic of study, and should
read the project description below for possible areas of interest.
Project Description
This project examines the growth area of language policy within a
French context. Focussing on recent developments in research into
language practices, language beliefs and language management, France
provides enormous scope and potential for investigating these pillars
of language policy. In addition, given the interest in the emerging
sub-field of the linguistic landscape, it is possible to marry
research into language policy with analysis of the linguistic
landscape.
The focus of this project might include research into language
management in a given region, language practices of a specific
language community or the marking of the public area of a particular
part of France. It is expected that this project will include a period
of fieldwork in France, undertaking data collection. The successful
applicant will become a member of the School's Sociolinguistics
Research Group which is currently working on a collaborative project
on the linguistic landscape.
