Dear all,

I hope you are enjoying the holiday and year-end season. I'm writing
to you from Berkeley, California in the U.S., and am very much looking
forward to the upcoming LL workshop in Siena.

A couple of notes here: since Heiko's post last time about the planned
LL workshop at the 12th International Conference on Minority Languages
(ICML XII) in Tartu from May 28-30 (http://groups.google.com/group/
linguisticlandscape/browse_thread/thread/17d1784df60fc4c8), this
Google group has been pretty quiet. Please feel free to use it for
discussion as we make our way to Siena, to share relevant work that
might get the creative and critical juices flowing before the
workshop, or, for those who aren't going to be able to make it, just
to keep the ball rolling about our respective work in LL.

Recently I've been blogging about a few LL-related issues, as a venue
to help push my own thinking with the aid of online maps and images.
I'll be posting there until and through the Siena workshop, and I
would be honored if anyone would like to read and/or comment there on
the posts.

#2--"Keep Off Media(n): What’s (in) a sign?": http://foundintranslation.berkeley.edu/?p=1292

Another related post by a colleague: "Signs from Around the World!":

The blog, "Found in Translation", is a community blog hosted out of
the Berkeley Language Center at my university, designed for the
exploration of issues of language, language learning, culture, and
identity; it's open to students, lecturers and researchers in Berkeley
and beyond, so if you would like to contribute a post as well, you're
more than welcome. :)

Best regards,

Happy New Year! Thanks, David, for getting the ball rolling ahead of
Siena, to which I am looking forward enormously - although it has a
lot to live up to after Tel Aviv... I'm also always impressed by what
goes on at Berkeley, such as the 'Found in Translation' blog.

The selection of papers for Siena looks very interesting, especially
in the light of the 'Expanding the Scenery' volume. I for one am
looking forward to the mental stimulation in prospect. And, of course,
the fine Italian food...

Dear Robert, David, and All!

Happy New Year also from the North East of Europe, and thanks David
for
keeping us updated on your activities!

Wishing all of you an exciting time in Siena - I'll think about you
and
delicious Italian food ;-) while shivering at a Language Rights
meeting
North of the Polar Circle in Finnish Lapland...

I was wondering - maybe it would be a good idea to spread information
about
our google group again to the participants of the Siena meeting so
that we
can increase posting frequencies etc. (I suppose you have thought
about that
anyway)?
And is there any chance to get something like a short report of the
main new
developments and pieces of inspiration from the meeting for those who
can't attend :-) :-)
:-) ??

Hello Heiko, Robert, and all,

Great to hear from you, and looking forward to seeing many of you
directly and some of you electronically in the coming days. The
weather's cold here in Siena but probably nothing like it is in
Finnish Lapland!

I've been working with Carla and Monica to set up a blog that might be
a little more accessible than this google group, where several of us
can chronicle the events of the workshop in Siena, and with the
possibility that those who are interested in continuing to post more
substantively about work and ideas in linguistic landscape can write
more regularly.

We've just set it up, and there are no posts as of this email but that
will change shortly. And currently you can download copies of the
workshop program and presentation abstracts. The link is:

http://linguisticlandscape.blogspot.com

This is a multi-user blog; as you can see there are 4 authors there
already and one called "linguistic landscape" which is the site
administrator name. The more authors the merrier -- if you would like
in any way to contribute, on a one-time or more regular basis, just
let me, Carla, or Monica know by email and we'll add you as a co-
author / collaborator.

Also, if you can please send suggestions as to what you'd like to see
on this blog, please email me back. Ideas could be:
* More links of interest to scholars of linguistic landscape
(personal, department, project homepages etc.)
* More files you'd like to be able to download from the site
* Multimedia (photo collection etc.)
* Other interactive features
* Suggestions or contributions for a header design image to spice up
the plain-looking blog

If the blog proves useful, we can continue to use it for more
substantial thinking and discussing, and continue to use this google
group for more administrative issues. That's just a thought on my
part; very much looking forward to talking with you about what you
feel would be useful.

Best,

David

Dear all,

In November Joost and I got a son, Odin. At the moment I am still on maternity leave. For this reason I am not able to attend the Siena linguistic landscape workshop. I wish the participants a very good time in this lovely city and I am looking forward to hearing about the outcomes of the workshop.

Best wishes,

Loulou

Dearest Carla,

This is to thank you so much for your kindness and wisdom, for being there whenever you were needed. I thank you for helping me with the presentation - I could not make it with out you!

I look forward to seeing you next year in Strasbourg; yours, Aura
