Subject: Google Summer of Code and Apertium/ Calling for Experts Help
To: FOSS Nepal

Respected member of the Nepali FOSS community,
With Google having announced another instance of the popular Google
Summer
of Code program this year, students worldwide are ready to search for
organizations and projects to work for. Although the organizations for
this
year's Google Summer of Code (GSoC) have not be decided yet, the
Apertium
MT project is a regular organization in the program. It is an open
source
Machine Translation system, available freely to develop. Although it
has
been available for many south Asian languages like Bengali for years
now,
the work on its Nepali system has not reached a significant level.
As the project seeks support for several languages, and is open
source,
last year I under the mentorship of Bal Krishna Bal Sir of LTK
developed a
morphological analyzer for Nepali (as a part of the MT system.) .
Just, as
Apertium had selected the Bengali-English MT system to be its
participant
for the GSoC, this year, provided that we have a sound support from
Nepali
Linguistic experts, we may include the development of an Open Source
Nepali-English Machine Translation System as a part of Google Summer
of
Code. Also, as far as I know, the system if developed shall be the
first
fully open source Nepali-English Machine Translation System and should
be
the firs ever project from Nepal to be accepted into the Google Summer
of
Code ( I am not sure, if there were any Nepali projects in GSoC
before).
As I happen to have developed the Nepali Morphological
Analyzer(http://ltk.org.np/downloads/
Report_internship_Apertium_MT_2011.pdf)
I shall take the responsibility of being the student developer.
However,
the Apertium Project requires community backing from experts in
Nepali, I
need a sound support to make the entire system.
Therefore, if you are reading this and are related to Nepali-English
Machine Translation or NLP in Nepali, please provide me with guidance
and
support and possibly act as my mentor for the Google Summer of Code
project
for developing a Nepali-English Machine Translation System based on
Apertium.
Thanking you all
Aish Raj Dahal
