Ihad installed VLC media player from the Ubuntu Software Center recently. It worked for some time, but then instead of the video, only a blank screen was displayed with the audio. Even the same videos that could be played before did not work.

How I found this out: I have a playlist file on the desktop. I typically press the "Show Desktop" button to minimize all windows before I run that playlist file. If VLC was already opened, it is now minimized. If I then open the playlist file, the VLC windows will pop back up, but the video will fail.

If the VLC still play without video the problem can be due to the incompatible video codec contained in the files. In this case, maybe need to convert the file to VLC more supported video format. You can choose Makemkv or Pavtube video converter, both powerful video tools.

Easy fix and no u don't need to listen to the above. Go into VLC and go to bottom right where the 3 dots are located and go to settings. Then go to video settings and turn off hardware decoding. Problem solved

I had the same issue on Ubuntu 22.10 Wayland VLC 3.0.17.4. When I purged the application, it worked exactly one time. When the vlc was launched for the second time, the video remained blank, however any snapshot taken worked.

I had the same problem with fresh install of Ubuntu 16.04 and fresh VLC.My video card is NVidia and I was using the binary proprietary driver version 361.42I switched to version 340.96 of the same driver and I got the video running without any problems.

This happened to me when I accidentally deleted libavcodec (probably it was targeted by apt-get autoremove after deleting some other package). In my case no player (I tried vlc, xplayer, smplayer) except browsers were not able to play any video (I tried for mp4, avi, mkv) but the audio worked. Re-installing this package fixed my problem. So check if it's installed.

I'm hearing some conflicting reports about this. What I'm trying to do is stream an mp3 file from a URL. I've done hours of research, but I cannot find any good guides on how to do this, or even what kind of audio player I should use.

Some friends tell me that AVPlayer can stream mp3, but the Apple documentation says it can't. I've poured over Matt Gallagher's audio streamer ( -and-playing-live-mp3-stream.html), but that code was made a good while ago, and I'm new enough to this that it's hard to work through the autoreleases and retains and all that.

All I need to do is grab it and start playing, with the ability to pause and scrub. So first things first, CAN AVPlayer stream mp3's? And if so, does anybody have any guides or code they can point me to? And if not, is there any kind of audio player class that can stream audio?

I've tried creating an AVPlayerItem, initialized with the URL, then adding it to an AVPlayer, but I'm getting a ton of Error Loading... and Symbol Not Found... errors. I'd appreciate any information on this, thank you!

You can also try my open source Audjustable library which supports HTTP streaming. It's based on Matt's AudioStreamer but has been tidied, optimised and updated to support multiple data sources (non HTTP) and gapless playback.

In addition to Sumit Mundra's answer, which helped me a lot, I found that this technique doesn't actually stream MP3 files from a remote server. When I implemented this, the file downloaded synchronously, blocking my UI, before playing. The way to properly stream the MP3 that I found worked very well was to point to an M3U file. This is just a text file with an .m3u extension which contains a link to the original MP3. Point Sumit's code at that file instead, and you have a stream that starts playing immediately.

Aaron's post about using an m3u file instead of an mp3 worked for me. I also found that AVPlayer was picky about the m3u syntax. For example, when I tried the following, I was unable to get a valid duration (it was always indefinite), and relative paths didn't work:

I have tried everything: renaming files and titles in order of use, making m3u file lists etc., but nothing works. It all ends up with files in seemingly random order. Sometimes only after I have added some more files to the mp3 player. Did they test it before putting it on the market? See:

Also if you have a list of file limits, or directory limits that would be useful to have as well, rather than always guessing. This is 2016, your software should be able to handle large names and large numbers of files.

The Jam & Sport models use a different (and less powerful) processor than previous players as it is not made by SanDisk and was discontinued by the manufacturer. They got the only one that was feasibly (& economically) possible. Hence these models work differently and some features are no longer available.

I have never tried using 5-digit dates in the audio title field of my ID3 tags. I typically use 2-digit prefixes (followed by a space or a hyphen) then text labels of 8 or more letters in the audio title field. The first 8 letters of the text labels should readily indicate the specific title of the audio file (not the artist name, etc). Seems like you have proven that 2-digit track numbers do not solve your situation. Maybe you can try using helpful data in the Album Title field in your ID3 tags.

And maybe you have discovered that BOOK MODE ignores your physical layout of subfolders in your AudioBook folder. Your subfolder layout can be used to help you properly manage your files on your player.

I can tell you that it really is possible to get this all to work in BOOK MODE with the correct combination of data entries in the ID3 tags. Once you have a working set of files you will hopefully start to enjoy using this handy little audio player.

Hiho,

I ve a view audio related questions:

Is there a way to fast-foward / rewind a mp3 song while playing with PlaySound node?

How to play .m3u playlists / streams ?

I could manage to extract the steam url from .m3u and put it into the playsound node... but is there a better way ?

What I want is a player to use with node red for mp3 and different formats, streams, supporting ff / rw, resume, giving back a play position/time ... or a node tha sopports this (radio stream stations , file local playback) ... the basic stuff for poor a musicplayer

Any ideas ? Thx !

If you are talking about node-red-contrib-play-sound it is based on nodejs play-sound. It play sounds by shelling out to one of the available audio players so it would depend on the abilities of the player you were using.

Ok, I just cant imagine how I should change parameters from an instance eg. mplayer which runs in background or could be started in CLI. It expects me to send keys to change song position. Do you have any idea about that ?

If you notice in the music player, the volume is controled by an exec node using mixer. The player controls (next/previous/pause/start) are all sent thru the playsound node (node-red-contrib-play-sound). I set it up with two possible players - apply and mplayer. That is because of the way the node works, it searches thru a variety of players, and I wanted to be able to work on my mac or a pi.

A M3U file is a file that comes with .m3u file extension. It is often an audio playlist file that stands for MP3 files but itself is not actual an audio file. More specifically, it is a text-based index file that contains a list of audio files. When you play a M3U file with M3U file player, the player does not play the M3U file itself but play the audio files after detecting the media address in the M3U file. As a text-based file, you can also open it with Notepad to find the media address. BTW, the M3U files that are UTF-8 encoded are saved in the M3U8 file format.

When you download IPTV channels playlist from online, the URL often ends with .m3u extension that you can directly play it with an IPTV player.
