From Volition to Obligation: Deontic Modal 愛ai3 in TSM
Friday
May 7, 2010, 13:00pm
Room C519, CHSS Building
Abstract:
In Mandarin, the word 要yao could function as volitional verb, volitive
modal, future aspect, and deontic modal; however, in Taiwanese
Southern Min (TSM), the corresponding functions are carried out by two
words 欲beh4 and 愛ai3 separately: 欲beh4 is in charge of all temporal
related functions, whereas the deontic modality is overwhelmingly
using 愛ai3. We observed from SM corpus that this asymmetrical
development in Mandarin and TSM could be due to the distributional
fact that in TSM, 愛ai3 can be used in pivotal constructions, an
environment that triggered the later development of the speaker-
oriented 愛ai3 into a deontic modal. This study is theoretically based
on the Stages of Development for Modality Senses that Bybee et al.
(1991) assumed while with some modifications to make itself accord
with the grammaticalization of the recently developed deontic modals
in TSM.
