Hello all,
We are glad to inform you that Prof R Vittal Rao has kindly agreed to continue the Functional Analysis lectures this semester if there is sufficient interest among students. To recap briefly what has been covered so far, Functional Analysis lectures by Prof RVR was held in 2 installments:
May - July 2012 - focused on background concepts from Analysis
Aug - Oct 2012 - focused on basics of Functional Analysis till Hilbert Spaces.
With the help of few student volunteers, we are in the process of completing the remaining lecture notes of the classes held in the last semester.
We are collecting information about the interest among students for resuming the classes by Prof RVR. The classes will be held after the official timings (after 5:30 PM) on weekdays.
Prof RVR has sent us some topics that he can teach at the beginning of the course. The topics are given below.
Hilbert Spaces – convergence – separable and non separable Hilbert spaces – orthonormal sets – Bessel’s inequality – complete orthonormal sets and Fourier series – Plancheral’s formula and Parseval’s identity – Gram Schmidt orthonormalization – structure of Hilbert spaces – closed subspaces and least square approximation – orthogonal projection – Riesz representation theorem
Bounded linear operators on Hilbert spaces – spectral theory for Completely continuous operators (Fredholm alternative), self adjoint and normal operators – Applications to integral equations
Please fill in the form latest by Feb 3, 2013 (Sunday) in case you are interested in attending the course. You can also enter any topic related to Functional Analysis that you need clarification and we can request Prof RVR to discuss them in the class.
If there is sufficient number of students interested, we can discuss with Prof RVR about the timings and venue of the classes.
