Gits 'er done!

This is a tiny and flat lens, hence the term "pancake." Although I was expecting it to be small, I was surprised how small it actually was. Wee among the wee. My only point of comparison is the decidedly diminutive Olympus 17mm 2.8 (M3/4) and the Panasonic is smaller.
I mounted her on my Olympus E-P3 and what a great optic, perfect for candids and snapshots: moderately wide, moderately fast, easy to slip in a pocket and fast and silent AF. AF is definitely a couple notches faster than my Olympus 17mm 2.8. The color, contrast and sharpness are very good wide open and improve to excellent stopped down a bit. And, yes, like my Olympus 17 2.8, it's a little softer around the edges wide open (as most lenses are). But it basically gets it right: subjects and scenes are sharp and pleasantly rendered. Sharpness it is similar to my Olympus 17mm 2.8 but with faster focus and less comely appearance.
There are a few minor gotchas. The manual focus ring is tiny, coarse
and not smooth turning. In contrast, the Olympus 17 2.8 manual focus ring is larger, grippy and turns silky smooth. I rarely use MF so no biggie but be forewarned. Although AF is virtually silent, the auto diaphragm is noisy, making a "sheeek" sound as it adjusts to maintain correct exposure in live view on my E-P3 (the diaphragm on my Olympus lenses are silent). Oddly, the auto diaphragm is virtually silent when it's mounted on my Panasonic GX1. Sadly, this lens lacks a dedicated hood. I bought a metal Leica style 46mm screw-in hood on Amazon and tossed the lens cap. I like my gear ready-to-shoot and a hood affords enough protection to keep buttons, fingers and most dust off the front element. Finally, while not ugly, the cosmetics aren't as attractive as the Olympus 17 2.8. Of course, Olympus has decades of camera and lens design experience over Panasonic and it shows in the details. Nevertheless, Panasonic nailed the important things and this optic is sharp, fast focusing and so
tiny it's hard to tell if a lens is mounted on your camera.
Finally, a note about the IDS Online Shop. This product is gray market and/or lens from a split kit (probably the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF3/14 2.5 kit). It arrived in a white box without instructions or warranty cards. I figured as much since it was sold for $100 to $150 less than normal Amazon prices. It was shipped reasonably fast and I can't complain much as $220 is an amazing price for a great lens. Wish IDS also sold the Panasonic 20 1.7 for a similar price...

sharp! and quick!

I have this lens on my omd m-5 love it, my only gripe isn't really a gripe, I find it particularly challenging to compose shots with this lens you really need to maintain everything centered balanced so any distortion from the angle won't distort the lines incorrectly (if that makes sense). Getting around that I've gotten some very satisfying images with this lens.
