to LINBRO COMMUNITY
Dear Linbro,
EWT and community groups have big, exciting plans for landfill. To my eye, nothing will pose a nuisance to the community. You may fee differently. Please have a look at Emily's part of the email to see EWT's ideas. Broadly it involves veg growing, reclaiming recyclable waste, school education tours  and recreation.

Please also think about how you might like to get involved. Please send replies to me, Michelle.
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Michelle Nel 083 208 7902

Hey Emily,
Fantastic proposals. I will run these past the community. Today I visited the landfill education centre and am pleased to announced that Reaketsetsa, a group of disabled folk from Alex have helped clean up the centre (I believe there is a meat dealer who also helped, Gerhard? please send the name so we can thank them). The centre is looking really good.

There is a fellow named Theo from fruitsandroots who has already spoken the the group about growing veg and will probably take the group to another site as part of the agronomic education to show what can be achieved.

Gerhard, I was approached by a school teacher from Alex who asks if he can grow veg as well?

Gerhard, thanks for opening your centre to Reaketsetsa for their twice weekly meetings. Thanks for the amazing soya mince you donated as well.

Emily, what would really help Reaketsetsa, according to co-ordinator Thembela, is some help with transport from Alex and back. they are currently travelling by taxi at a cost of R250 a day (for the group)

Really, really excited about what's happening.

And yes, we must meet soon!

Good morning all

I hope you had a wonderful weekend.

I would like to get going with proposals for funding to do some projects on the property but I want to make sure that everyone is on the same page and that these are projects that would fit in with your visions for the property. The potential projects would include (but are not limited to):

1.       Creating an interactive and functional education and training centre for school learners and community members – this would be a renovation of existing centre.

2.       Training community members to grow food gardens around the training centre

a.       Cultivation training

b.       providing them with business advice and, where possible, markets for their produce.

3.       Waste management projects:

a.       Correct identification and separation of waste material

b.       Appropriate disposal of non-recyclable waste

c.       Processing of recyclable materials – will include training on the construction and use of shredder, extrusion, injection and compression machines. Blueprints for these machines are available and a trainer is available to demonstrate how to construct them.

d.       Upcycling – training community members to make items to sell out of recyclable materials. Full and comprehensive course available.

e.       EcoBricks

-          The creation of EcoBricks by filling plastic bottles with compacted unrecyclable waste.

-          Construction of infrastructure using the bricks / selling bricks

4.       Rehabilitation of the property for recreational purposes such as walking, cycling or horse riding.

a.       Training and employing community members in clearing of alien and invasive vegetation – practical training on site but once trained, teams can be contracted to other properties.

b.       Revegetation of the property

5.       Conducting tours for school learners and other youth groups to learn about waste management, food security and the conservation of biodiversity in the city.

Please look at these options and let me know if they are in line with your objectives, and would be permitted by the landowners. We will then need to start thinking about where we might be able to apply for funding for the different projects. Once I have had your feedback I would like us to meet again, perhaps this time joined by the COJ?

I look forward to hearing from you.

Warm regards

Emily Taylor
