I have proposed that the Linbro Park Dump-site be converted into a private nature reserve as a public amenity to create an asset out of the 144 Hectare liability and eyesore.
There is probably room on the Southern side for a 140 room hotel on virgin ground. The views of Johannesburg and surrounds are a spectacular 360 degrees, with the Voortrekker Monument visible on a clear day.
Methane escape is at fairly low proportions after its closure going on 10 years. Pikitup are monitoring this with the aid of a company “Tailor-made Solutions” who we observed taking samples today
Herewith a digital copy of the 2007 End Use Plan. This document is the latest I have on file. I do not know whether it was subsequently amended, but this document serves a basis for further amendment.
After a tour of the site last week, officials from Pikitup have expressed enthusiasm and so has Councillor Darren Bergman for the project.
In the interim, Pikitup are going to do a clean-up including the construction of a ring road and the removal of alien and exotic tree. We are also working to source decent friable soil to improve the cover on the site – quite a bit is available from construction sites in Linbro Park proper. Hence my including Liviero Civils, Improvon, Heartlands, Intaprop, Abbeydale, in this distribution.
As a member of Operation Wildflower, I am hoping we will be able access indigenous rescued plants at a modest cost from this source. City Parks have also expressed interest to support this initiative.
Johannesburg Water advise that our utilisation of the water from existing boreholes for irrigation will help reduce the toxicity of the ground water.
I have also spoken to members of the Private Game-owners Association who believe we will be able to obtain donations of antelope, buck and other fauna to populate the Reserve from its members. The Linbro Park Nature Reserve will justify and merit support from instances such as Freeme, EWT and the NSPCA, I hope.
The sine qua non would be the security of the site. Once we progress a little further in basic planning, I have been told that funding for this infrastructure would be forthcoming from several sources such as DTI, Development Bank, financial institutions.
The End-Use Document from 2007 envisaged a website but this has not yet been implemented. This I can do quite easily and I have also created a discussion group linbropark-n...@googlegroups.com to which you can address your replies to this email. If you have not received an invitation to this group as yet, please contact me. Please also be so kind as to suggest other persons who you think are important to be “in the loop” on this project.
From Monday, 14th October 2013, I am available to host a viewing of the site. Please contact me as to when you are available to do so.
In the meanwhile, I hope the idea of a Linbropark Nature Reserve “grabs” you and we look forward to your comments. If for any reason you are unable to post to linbropark-n...@googlegroups.com direct initially, please send your post to me and I will post on your behalf, and see that you are correctly enrolled in the Linbropark Nature Reserve Members’ list.
Best regards

0201_Linbro Park Landfill Tour
Dear All
A Linbro Park landfill tour held on the 2 October 2013 between Musa Jack, Dave Harris, Michelle Nel and Nico Nel refers.
The following actions discussed during the tour are as follows:
· A Walk about inspection will be held next week between Dave Harris, Desmond Manneson and Michelle Nel.
· From the issues noted from the walkabout inspection an action plan will be drafted listing the quick wins to make the site more presentable.
(Items such as clearing of the ring road and security issues will be included in the plan.)
· A detailed action plan will be drafted and forwarded to all members for any additional comments.
· On the day of the walkabout the top soil that is available for cover will be inspected and if suitable permission will be granted to be used on the site as cover.
Pikitup thanks Nico and Michelle for the effort and time taken to ensure that the site will be established as the best closed site in Johannesburg.
For Further enquires please do not hesitate to contact us.
Kind Regards
Dave Harris.
I have arranged an additional tour of the Linbro Park proposed Conservancy for 5 pm on Monday 14th October, leaving Nelton Farm at 17h15 sharp. Please RSVP if you would like to join either this tour or the earlier one at 15h00.
Oh, and thank you for the compliment, Sinah, of “Nice” Nel.
I met with a property broker this morning and he was gob-smacked by the views available and the project. He thought that the Hotel site could fetch a price of upwards R30 Million and this would be a nice starting point in finding capital funding for the project.
Somebody else has contacted me, excited by the prospect of setting up an arts and crafts centre on the site to showcase the work of South African artists and craftsmen.
Several construction companies and developers have been in contact saying they would be delighted to deliver their excess soil from their building sites for free to be used as additional cover needed for rehabilitation.
I am putting pressure on PIKITUP for the construction of the ring roads and clearing of the perimeter fences as a start to our providing the site with security. PIKITUP have also promised a site clean-up as a matter of urgency.
Regards

I am sorry that I did not advise members of the Greater Alexandra Interest Group in my email below. This will, undoubtedly be of interest to many of them.
I am taking a tour of the dump on Monday 14th at 15h00 sharp from Nelton Farm. I can accommodate a few more on this particular tour but more tours will be conducted on demand. The duration would be about half an hour.
Meanwhile, I would be gratified if this project gets support from Alexandra who would, in any event, be the major beneficiaries. I look forward to comment from you.
Regards
Nico
