I've checked the firewall settings on the Mac. Uninstalled and reinstalled Java and yet no joy. I've amended the settings under Safari to trust the java.com website and even run applets in Unsafe mode, still not working.

Kathy Sierra has been interested in learning theory since her days as a game developer (Virgin, MGM, Amblin'). More recently, she's been a master trainer for Sun Microsystems, teaching Sun's Java instructors how to teach the latest technologies to customers, and a lead developer of several Sun certification exams. Along with her partner Bert Bates, Kathy created the Head First series. She's also the original founder of the Software Development/Jolt Productivity Award-winning javaranch.com, the largest (and friendliest) all-volunteer Java community.

For a less strenuous and more broadly informative visit, try Java Ventures (call 415-595-2924 or 202-657-5708 or go to javaventures.com), a company that specializes in in-depth tours for coffee fiends and industry people. Seven- to nine-day visits run about $1,500.

So yes, you can use Legacy launcher and still have it use the New launcher's Java version (in my case, Executable is now set to /Applications/Minecraft.app/Contents/runtime/jre-x64/1.8.0_74/bin/java in the Legacy launcher's profile I'm using).

So I removed the "1.6.0.jdk/" folder I had (according to _jdk.html#A1096903), and I'm now launching the "new launcher" (since the legacy launcher NEEDS java 1.6.0.jdk to work). I'll update the topic once done.

it's because with the new launcher, minecraft uses it's own bundled java, as you can see right here. you need to set the executable manually in the profile editor, but i don't know where java is installed on a mac. on linux and windows, minecraft already has the right path in the executable option and all you need to do is to check it (see this picture for reference).

Choose the installer file for your Operating System (OS). The installer page may try to run a java applet to identify your OS, but you can ignore/not run the applet if you wish and simply select the correct OS installer.

You may be asked if you want to allow the java application and/or popups in your browser, and you should set these to allow (allow and remember if possible). Then you should be guided through the installation.
