Noincome tax? No VAT? One couldn't possibly speculate how accurately the wheeler-dealers in four-part series Del Boys and Dealers (BBC1) fill in their returns, but, like Del, they're fun to spend time with.
So much fun, in fact, that you can almost hear the commissioning editor's hum of satisfaction over the opening credits. DB&Ds followed the stories of a rag-tag (rag-and-bone-tag?) bunch of traders who frequent auctions in what the narrator euphemistically called the "trash and treasure market". Less Christie's and Sotheby's in St James's and Mayfair and more Greasby's in Tooting.
Out of nowhere, this was glorious TV. An hour that made me laugh as much as any sitcom I've watched this week, but produced with a deft enough touch to make it clear that its main characters are in on any jokes.
Among the dealers hoping to find their own version of Del's Harrison watch were Richie and Nikki, a young London couple; rag-and-boner Brian Greenaway; Sharon and Al from Essex and poor old Ieuan in Newport.
Richie and Nikki had a bit more luck. Richie is about as close to being a proper Del Boy as anyone featured here. A geezer with an eye for a bit of a "tickle" he was trying to rustle up some funds to inject into his fledgling car-spraying business called, er, Autocare & Sons.
One hopes that they've got other funds as they don't seem particularly astute. At one point, Sharon bought 231 bags of polystyrene snowballs for 14.16. She did make a profit by selling two on eBay but was then left with 229 packets of polystyrene snowballs to shift. They later bought a knackered 1984 hearse with flames painted on the bonnet. For some reason they struggled to sell it on.
This, frankly, is the wonderful side of capitalism. The title might be a cynical way of luring in Only Fools fans, but it's also not without reason. We loved Derek Trotter because he liked, in Richie's phrase "a bit of a tickle". Del might have sold you a dodgy vacuum cleaner, but he would never have, say, used leverage to buy your favourite football club, or invested your life savings into a Ponzi scheme, or bunga-bungaed your pension into junk bonds. It's why God blessed Hooky Street, and not Wall Street. More!

Would you believe that Wheeler Dealers has graced our screens for just over 14 years now? The show first aired on October 7th, 2003, which saw host Mike Brewer purchase an old Porsche 924 for just 700.
Mike also took a moment to discuss the infamous video which emerged online earlier this month of him talking about Edd at a classic car show in the US, suggesting it appeared to be far more damning than it was in reality.
I think most are missing the point here.. firstly it is a TV show and much at times has to be scripted! a whole classic car in some cases brought back to life in a condensed 45 minutes! try that if you can! I very much liked Ed, his knowledge and his entertaining comments regarding assembly and disassembly.. and really.. 13 series of week in week out with the spanner must have taken a toll on him.. I was very sorry to see him go! However Ant stepped up and has done a great job! albeit with a different style and attitude but very knowledgeable as well! now we have Elvis.. refreshingly different to the first two but I very much enjoy his input to the show as well! Now we have Mike.. well to be totally honest the thing I really like about Mike is what you see is what you get! sure he hams it up sometimes but that is the show and he does a great job of trying to be the best he can! As a 74 year old I mucked about with a lot of the old cars they have all worked on and it takes me back to my youth.. and as such I just love the show and have watched and re watched many episodes.. I so much enjoy all of the episodes for what they are.. top TV! and I would advise every one to stop trying pull the show to pieces.. just enjoy!
Mike is a grandstander you can see in the previouse episodes with edd that he always likes to take the stage, It`s all about mike ,he was portraying edd as the worker while he was the king pin of the show, Having been associated with the motor trade for 40 + years and can truthfully tell you that car dealers are the top of the pile lyers and mike brewer is no exception.I used to enjoy the show with edd as he was an extremely skillfull guy.Brewer is just another car dealer that you wouldn`t trust. he does not know what he is buying just another tyre kicker. And the part that gets me is when he takes a component round to another workshop to be repaired, instead of leaving it there for the guy to repair he wants to get involved in the repair, these workshops should give him marching orders and tell him to come back when the job is done.I for one wouldn`t bother watching the show again,With edd gone so is the magic of the show and i would put my money on the saying that brewer back doored edd if the truth be known.
Here in Australia we are still seeing Edd and Mike. I would watch the show as the concept is great but Mike spoils the whole show with all his bullshit and stupid antics. There is on doubt that Edd is the show and Mike just the very annoying sidekick.
Hello all
My wife and I are planning on moving to Ireland, my ancestral homeland sometime in the next year. I am a muscle car enthusiast and trying to decide if it is worth shipping my cars to Ireland or selling them before we move.
The cars are concourse quality 1967, 68 & 69 Camaros. The 67 & 69 are both RS/SS. The 67 is a 327, 300hp. The 69 is a 396, 350hp and a convertible. The 68 is a SS 350. All the cars are extremely original matching numbers etc. etc.
I would like very much to discuss this with Mike Brewer, any suggestions or advice other contacts would be most appreciated. Thank you.
All the best,
James
You could see from the last two British WDs that Mike wanted to be the star trying his hand at working on little bits on the car, not only that what about his sole show WDs trading up without Ed and now being in America permanently. So who stabbed who in the back ?
I will not watch the new series as I have no interest in American cars. Fine for those who like them. I have no time for those who abused Mike but for me the show is so much poorer for being exclusively set in the USA and Ant may be a good mechanic but he is not Edd. Please now move back to the UK and bring back Edd.
We will never know the real reasons that made Edd to leave, and, of course, only mad people could offend Mike and his family for this reason. But life goes on and Ant makes an excellent work, very fine mechanic and explains in an extraordinary way all thing he does.
If something i working well then WHY CHANGE IT? I think some people feel insecure when one person in their team is favoured by fans more than themselves. Just do your job well and let the fans choose.
So pleased you found a way and the strength to climb above your problems and put something from the tv to good use. So often I feel that the tv has a negative impact on people with violence and destruction.
The big joke about wheeler dealers is the supposed profits they make, they never put any overheads for tools, equipment ,premises etc factor those in and the time involved and most of Mike Brewers supposed profits would be losses, I ve a garage and restoration business, it is hard earned cash!
I enjoyed the new series I enjoy the show. But its a TV show and its changed. Be interesting to see what Ed China does next. If it all stopped people would just watch something else. Not a matter of life or death.
All I am going to say is that I gave the new format of WD with them using Ant aa the cosen gearhead and I find it not worth losing a minute of my life watching. Mike was only tollerable because I knew the show would swing to the shop and see Ed give some real shop talk and shared knowledge that only a true gearhead can understand. I gave the new show three viewings and after the first one I felt Vrlocity dropped the ball and am still questioning why I gave it two more viewings. To much hollywood for me now. Good luck Ed.
Personally for me . I lost interest when it became Trading up. . I used to really look forward to seeing how Ed China put his technical and mechanical skills into fixing cars that were well past their sell by date. Sorry Mike . I know your good at what you do, but for me Edd China was the main Star of the show..
I cant understand why people think that Edds working cost should be in the calculation. The whole idea is to show that you can restore cars on your own and make a small profit on it, a lot like Property ladder with Sarah Beeny.
If I want to see instruction videos with Edd I can see his new brake videos on YouTube. This is a lot like when the beard left Fast n Loud, it is still Richard searching for barn finds that is the interesting part. The restoration is fun, but I dont need to see every detail.
My favorite episodes are the E-type and the Volvo PV.
Ta da!
