Godsmack is the major label debut album by American rock band Godsmack. It was released by Republic Records and Universal Records on August 25, 1998.[5] The album's recording was initially paid for by the band, at a cost of $2,600, at New Alliance Studios in Boston, and released through the band's own record label E. K. Records Company under the title All Wound Up... in February 1997.[5][6][7] When the band was signed to Republic/Universal in June 1998, All Wound Up... was partly edited and remixed, fully remastered at Sterling Sound in New York, and given a new artwork and layout before being re-released.[7][8][9]

The album was certified Gold on April 13, 1999, and Platinum on June 15, 1999,[10][9] the latter only nine days after it was controversially banned from several leading chain stores due to questionable lyrics and imagery.[10] A Parental Advisory sticker was quickly added before the album resumed distribution, ultimately reaching 4 Platinum on December 4, 2001.[11]

The album differs from All Wound Up... by splitting the song "Get Up, Get Out!" into two tracks (the intro portion being re-titled "Someone in London"). "Whatever", which was recorded in February 1998 as a separate single and was added as a bonus track to later pressings of All Wound Up..., was edited into the album itself and served as the lead single after the reissue.[6] The band had originally planned to keep "Whatever" for its next album (which later took shape as Awake), but included it on Godsmack.[7] An entire sample lifted from the 1995 film Murder In The First, was removed from the ending of "Moon Baby" because actor Gary Oldman would not grant permission of its use.[7] Another sample was also removed from the intro of "Bad Religion".[7]

The song "Going Down" was removed from the main edition of Godsmack, though it was included as a bonus track on the Japanese edition. It was later re-recorded for the band's second major album Awake, under the slightly modified title "Goin' Down". Another song recorded at the same time as "Whatever" in February 1998, "Bad Magik", was only included as a Japanese bonus track on Godsmack, and was also later re-recorded for Awake, with the slightly modified title "Bad Magick".[7][8]

Other minor changes were made to songs' beginning and end fades during the remastering.[7][8] All Wound Up... was originally mastered by Jonathan Wyner at M-Works in Cambridge, Massachusetts,[12] but Godsmack was remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio at Sterling Sound in New York City.[13] Erna played drums on all of the songs, except "Whatever" which featured Joe D'Arco.[12] Nevertheless, Tommy Stewart is credited as drummer in the liner notes.[13]

After playing the Boston area over the following two years, local radio stations WAAF, WBCN WFNX began playing the singles "Keep Away" and "Whatever", both of which helped the band to sell copies of their self-financed album All Wound Up. After the demand for their album became too high, Republic Records/Universal Records stepped in and signed the band to their label in 1998. The band replaced drummer Joe D'Arco with Tommy Stewart and All Wound Up was remastered and released six weeks later as Godsmack.

The album caused controversy due to its profane lyrics, and liner notes containing a Wiccan pentagram and reference to "Salem witches", minus a Parental Advisory warning label.[17][10] After listening to his son's copy of the album, a father in the U.S. complained to Walmart, who sold him the album, that the lyrics were offensive. Walmart and Kmart took the album off the shelves. The band and its record label later added a Parental Advisory sticker to the album, and some stores ordered amended copies of the album. Erna commented on the situation to Rolling Stone magazine, stating, "Our record has been in the marketplace for more than a year now without a parental advisory sticker and this is the one and only complaint. Stickers and lyrics are by nature subjective. We have decided to put a sticker on the record." This controversy did not hurt album sales, but according to Erna, helped, stating, "It's almost taunting kids to go out and get the record to see what we're saying on it."

Godsmack is an American rock band founded in 1995 by singer Sully Erna and bassist Robbie Merrill. The band has released eight studio albums, one EP, two compilations, three video albums, and thirty-four singles. Erna and Merrill recruited local friend and guitarist Lee Richards and drummer Tommy Stewart to complete the band's lineup.[1] In 1996, Tony Rombola replaced Richards, as the band's guitarist.[2] In 1998, Godsmack released their self-titled debut album, a remastered version of the band's self-released debut, All Wound Up....[3] The album was distributed by Universal/Republic Records and shipped four million copies in the United States. In 2001, the band contributed the track "Why" to the Any Given Sunday soundtrack. After two years of touring, the band released Awake. Although the album was a commercial success, it failed to match the sales of Godsmack.[4] In 2002, Stewart left the band due to personal differences, and was replaced by Shannon Larkin.[5]

The band's third album, Faceless (2003), debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200.[4] In 2004, Godsmack released an acoustic-based EP titled The Other Side. The EP debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 and was certified gold by the RIAA.[6] The band contributed the track "Bring It On" to the Madden 2006 football game in 2005; this track is not featured on any known album or compilation. The band released its fourth studio album, IV, in 2006. IV was the band's second release to debut at number one, and has since been certified platinum.[4][6] After touring in support of IV for over a year, Godsmack released a greatest hits album called Good Times, Bad Times... Ten Years of Godsmack. The album included every Godsmack single (with the exception of "Bad Magick"), a cover of the Led Zeppelin song "Good Times Bad Times" and a DVD of the band's acoustic performance at the House of Blues in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Their fifth studio album, The Oracle, was released on May 4, 2010. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200,[4] making Godsmack one of the few bands with three consecutive albums that debuted at #1 on the chart, a feat that also has been accomplished by Van Halen, U2, Metallica, Dave Matthews Band, Staind, Disturbed, Linkin Park, Tool, and Slipknot.

"And it's because it's emotional, man. This is the last record we're ever gonna do. This is the last run around the mill for us. We put every single ounce of energy and emotion into this album. Especially for me, when I wrote a lot of these songs, it was about my life journey. That's really what the sequence of this album becomes about. Not that it was planned that way, but this really kind of mystical thing happened where I felt like the universe wrote this record."

"I don't know what we're gonna do after this record. And it doesn't make sense to continue to do music. It really feels complete in a good way, in a positive way. We feel like we've honored our career, our relationships with our fans, and we're always gonna be there for them; we're gonna do shows. But as far as to continue this, after this [album], unless we just decide one day, 'Yeah, one more for the road,' I think this could be it for us with new music."

Godsmack is an American alternative metal band from Lawrence, Massachusetts, formed in 1995. The band is composed of founder, frontman and songwriter Sully Erna, guitarist Tony Rombola, bassist Robbie Merrill, and drummer Shannon Larkin. Since its formation, Godsmack has released seven studio albums, one EP, four DVDs, one compilation album, and one live album.

The band has had three consecutive number-one albums (Faceless, IV, and The Oracle) on the Billboard 200. The band also has 20 top ten rock radio hits, including 15 songs in the top five, a record number of top ten singles by a rock artist.

The late '90s saw a turn in the music industry. The grunge era had begun to run its course, and while it was initially lumped in with the alternative scene, the poppier side of alt-rock was being phased out at radio in favor of harder edged music. Critics dubbed the wave of burgeoning acts as "nu-metal," but a few bands who emerged during this period relied more on heavy hard rock than the rap-rock explosion of the day. And one of those acts was a Boston-based group called Godsmack.

After a few lineup changes, the band, featuring Robbie Merrill, Tony Rombola and drummer Joe Darco, hit the studio to record an album called All Wound Up. Merrill told Loudwire, "We started in an attic. I was older and I never thought this was gonna happen, but we got signed, and that was just the beginning ... I feel luck, I feel skill, it was like everything aligned."

Right out of the gate, the band garnered the attention of local Boston radio station WAAF and listeners responded to a new song called "Keep Away" that really started to take off. Not long after, they entered the studio to record another new song called "Whatever" and that too commanded the Boston airwaves. To say the least, it wasn't long until the major labels came calling. After signing to Republic/Universal, the group then found themselves with a platform to translate their local success to a national stage.

"The label likes how we've accomplished everything the old-fashioned way [by touring]," Erna told The Reader. "They set us down and said, "We don't want to tell you what to do, just keep doing what you're doing."

Darco exited the band just as things were starting to take off, with Tommy Stewart coming on board to handle drums. The band re-entered the studio and remastered All Wound Up, changed the artwork and eventually decided to self-title the disc with a few minor tweaks before it was released to a national audience on Aug. 25, 1998. Among those tweaks was the addition of a new song called "Someone in London," while the All Would Up track "Goin' Down" was removed, but later appeared on the band's sophomore set Awake.
